we are in the process of booking a holiday apartment for 2 weeks when we arrive in december.
i,m starting a course at nambour tafe , found a few in Marcoola and mudjimba.
These look quiet areas , fairly well placed & on the beach, good to unwind
any downsides to mudjimba or marcoola?

I think you've summed them up pretty well, they are both pretty quiet areas with stunning beaches, ideal for a short holiday relaxing on the beach. If your budget stretches far enough, hire a car for the duration of your stay so that you can see a few sights within approx 50km. Sunshine coast airport is at Marcoola, as is Twin Waters (great golf course there). The following are downsides:
a) unemployment in the immediate area (not a problem for you if you're only staying for 2 weeks and are on a course
b) No big supermarkets or shops in the area (I don't think this is really a problem though.

When you book your accommodation, it would be worth being cheeky and asking for a beach view apt (even if you've only paid for a bog standard one). But if you are staying in high season (after 12th Dec) this probably won't work.

is mudjimba about a 15-20 min drive from nambour?

according to google, it is 17.3kms and 24mins. I would round that up to 30mins each way.

If you are thinking of renting there, make sure that you get a good idea of the flightpaths at sunsine coast airport before you sign up to anything.
