Mine are costing about $75.00 for 2 two hour sessions through the University Sports Club.

I think it's about $100 or so if you go to Surf WA direct.
cheers for that, sounds reasonable.

how many lessons does the average u.k non surfer need before he can actually stand on a moving board.?

I'll let you know when I manage to stand on a moving board.

I can windsurf though so I'm hoping this will help, although it's what they call "slalom" windsurfing, not wave surfing.

You should be standing on a soft foam board after your first lesson. You will be surfing froth though. Moving on to catching clean waves on a fibre glass board takes a lot of practise and pain. Took me 10 hours before I got one but it was worth it. Catching the wave is harder than standing.

Hopefully you do not mind swallowing salt water and experiencing drowning sensations. The sport is hard work and needs time. If you give the time the rewards are fantastic. The real moment of cracking it is when you move along a clean wave for the first time. The speed is exhilerating.

I've still got water coming out of my nose from this mornings session, must of got rinsed at least half a dozen times!

Still the wind is now blowing so it's out with kite! I just love these surfing in the morning, kiting in the afternoon days!
