Suburb of Thornlie, PERTH; Good, Bad or Ugly?
Hi,
We're settling into Perth nicely and have started looking for a house to buy on the south side of the city close to a train line. After some searches we determined that there's a good few houses we could afford out in Thornlie (close to Maddington). We've driven around it a wee bit but still don't understand why there's so many cheap(ish) homes out there - we've tried doing some online research and there's nothing un-toward coming up about it. Does anyone live out there and can you cast some light on the abundance of nice newish homes?
Cheers

I dont live in Thornlie, but I used to work as a community nurse there. Its certainly not the worse area in Perth. Its got its problems like most places, but I have to say I never had any problem there and the services surrounding Thornlie are good. Its generally a lower socio-economic area and it has a problem with hoons.
Hope it helps a little
good luck

We are renting in Bull Creek and are now buying in Forrestdale. WE did look at properties in Thornlie/Canning Vale/Southern River. I was told by the real estate agent that there is a world of difference betwen Canning Vale and Thornlie with Garden Street the dividing line. Live on the Canning Vale side and your house will be worth much more, will be newer and the area 'nicer'? Thornlie is older and the properties cost less. Depends what you want?

Suggest you take a look - drive down Garden Street and you will see Older properties in Thornlie and newer ones in Canning Vale, with the nice estates, lakes, fountains, parks etc etc

Yes we have noticed that Canning Vale is a newer area and hence more expensive. We dont mind the older style house and Thornlie has just been re-zoned so there are new developments being built. Hopefully that will mean the house prices go up. To be honest we dont really mind about price - we have up to $550k to spend but the houses in Thornlie seem to have more outdoor space than anything else we have seen. We just wanted to be sure there were no HUGE problems with the area before we took the leap into buying something

trust me you should look at REIWA for some of the houses there- have huge back gardens / 3-4 beds for less than 400k. Yes they may need a bit of work but only 20mins out of city. Think its top of our list at the moment. We live in Victoria Park just now but cant get what we want here for our budget!

People do live there or did you just mean Poms?? My Auntie lives in Thornlie she has done for the last 15 years, she likes it and where she is seems pretty quiet. I think most new immigrants now seem to go slightly further North or South (like ourselves), whereas 20 or 30 years ago a lot of Poms moved to Thornlie ,Armadale or Kelmscott.

Re: Suburb of Thornlie, PERTH; Good, Bad or Ugly?
I moved to Thornlie as the child of a ten-pound-pom in 1969. In those days it was "THE" suburb for poms.
These days, the suburb is a mix of older folks who've been there a while and recent migrants looking for a cheap way of getting into the housing market. My dad still lives there, but not in the same house, they knocked his house down to build the train station.
Generally the older houses are small but on pretty decent sized blocks. We lived in a three bedroom / 1 bathroom / 1 reception room house but fortunately the back yard had enough room for the 8 kids to stake a place of their own. In summer we stayed in tents or slept under the stars in the back garden rather than in the house. Some of the newer parts of Thornlie have larger houses but house design has changed quite a bit between the early 70's and now so if you're looking for large open plan areas, new suburbs like canning vale will probably suit you better.
Sure, there's a few hoons around Thornlie now, but nothing like the pommie gangs of the 70's. No skinheads any more, but a few African, Asian or Australian indeginous groups of kids that are bored and broke.
However, Thornlie has good public transport, has the train, is quite close to the city and is probably a very good long term investment.
