Stupid question (but valid) snakes in the backyard??

hello people,
I was watching the Discovery Channel and this time some guy was in Australia hunting for snakes.
The commentator said the following:
"many Australians are used to confront a snake in the backyard".
I have a two year old son... And I want to have a house with a backyard ofcourse. From what I could see the city was metropolitan but was unfortunately unable to identify which city it was.
Does Sydney residents have such "unwanted" guests in their backyard?

Thanks
Amrohvi

I've lived in Sydney for nearly 30 years and have only ever seen three snakes - and none of those were in Sydney, they were all way out in the bush miles away from any houses.

Just don't buy a house anywhere near that nice, rural bushland and you won't see any snakes either..

The one to watch out for is the Silvertail native to the Northern
beaches of Sydney
But hay very rare in built up areas if if you see a snake ring the local council
about as much chance of encountering one as a badger or Hedge hog in Uk

Snakes do need water nearby.....well, the little animals that they eat need the water. They are more likely to be near fresh water than the beach.

My parents live close to a lake - approx 300 metres away. As the drought has worsened over the years, they have seen more and more wildlife (birds, snakes etc) as they come closer to this fixed water source.
