I've got a post 1998 loan and I pay via a standing order (that way I have complete control over it) not a direct debit from a UK bank account which I kept open for this purpose. I transfer over money every now and then to cover it. You can also make payments over the phone by debit or credit card. You just have to keep them informed of your circumstances. They write to me annually asking for proof of my earnings (letter from my employer) and then they write back and tell me my new repayment amount for the year.
