Student Loans ...
Without wanting to appear tight ... what would happen if I emigrated without paying off the remainder of my student loan?
Would i get hunted down by the Gov. or would they write off the debt (its less than 3k ... the equivalent of shipping my cats out).
Any thoughts?????
Cheers

My husband spent a while in Aus straight after uni and they did track him down when it was time to start paying.
I did read somewhere that if you are out of the country for over a certain aount of time you become exempt, but I don't know where and I think that was back in my student days, I would say that with all the changes in student loan companies that rule may well have changed now also.

If you tell them before you go that you are going, they will give you a couple of months to get sorted and to let them know your new address and proof of earnings. You will have to repay the same amount as you would if you were in the UK i.e. X% of your earnings over X. You need to keep a UK account open to make the direct debits to their account. You do not have to pay it all off before you go.
If you bugger off and don't tell them, they will put the interest rate up on your account to quite a lot (at the moment it is just in line with inflation). True, they may never find you, but do you want to come back into the country to visit with a note against your file waiting for you when you go through passport control?!
Plus if you remember back to the days when you took it out, chances are you had to give details of 2 people you knew. This was in case you moved and they couldn't track you down, they could chase those people instead. In my case, I put down my brother and my mum and dad. My brother has since moved but my mum and dad are still at the same address and I don't really fancy them having the bailiffs coming round!
If you are just going to be out of the country and not earning (say on a year's gap year) then you just have to let them know and send them copies of your return plane tickets. They will suspend you having to repay for that period. But if you are emigrating then you will have to keep paying provided you earn over the threshold
