Choice is the sister magazine to Which in the UK.) "Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) - almost all foods (except alcohol, sweets and soft drinks) contain some thiamin. The best sources are pork, cereals, legumes and nuts. A breakfast of fruit, cereal with milk, and toast will provide just over half the RDI for an adult man. If the toast is spread with Vegemite or Marmite, breakfast alone will supply most people's daily needs." You can buy English Marmite here, but because there is already an Aussie Marmite, they have had to change the name. So the jar and the colours on the label are the same but the name shows "Our Mate". You can bring it into the country ok, as long as you declare it at customs. My husband brought some back last week, a huge jar, the customs official laughed and said "that stuff should be banned, you Poms are always bringing it in". Hubby also brought back some stuff the kids were missing, and it all cleared ok, guess he did the right thing by going through the channel for anything to declare. Quicker too, there was no queue, everyone else was going through the nothing to declare channel and was taking ages. A couple of pork chops with a thick layer of vegimite spread on top for breakfast.....that'll do me; sorted, luvly jubly. :) |
Andrew's dad who is diabetic swears that if you have a diet high in sugar or are diabetic that you are more prone to bites. I feel really sorry for him oh and Andrew, both get attacked while I get nothing. There may actually be some truth in this as Jacqui found this info.... I hardly ever drink pop/squash or eat anything sweet where Andrew drinks it by the gallon and Andrew's dad is on the highest dose of insulin and tablets but still gets high bloods so I guess he must smell really sweet. Anyone got any thoughts on this. Sarah |
Vit b1 definitely works, Juan used to get really badly bitten, to the stage where his ankle once was so swollen he couldnt walk, he then started to take it a couple of weeks before we went on holiday and was never bitten.
when we arrived here he was bitten on our first weekend as he hadnt been taking the b1, he's taken it ever since and no more bites, he still has the scars from the ones he got the first weekend and thats 5 months on. Only side affect he has mentioned is it makes your wee very yellow. Lynn |
Re: Stopping mozzy bites - not a question
Originally posted by Go Banana's !! Just read on organicfoods website that it is Vit B1 (Thiamin) that stops the mozzy bites, taken in doses of 150mg or above. According to this very useful freebie book of mine: "The total amount (of thiamin) in the human body is only about 30mg and an intake of around one milligram per day is enough to keep the body saturated. If more thiamin is taken than is needed, it is quickly excreted in urine. Thus, for most people, there is no point taking a daily supplement that contains more than a milligram....................Thiamin is relatively non-toxic when taken by mouth, possibly because only about 5mg can be absorbed from any single dose. If people take more than 3g per day regularly they may suffer headache, irritability, rapid pulse, weakness, contact dermatitis and one death has been reported." |
