No sh|t sherlock!

Have just been looking for a stand to put my laptop on. Ikea have something that will do the job (Dave laptop stand), prices are...
  • USA - A$20 (US$18)
  • UK - A$28(GBP17)
  • AU (VIC/NSW/QLD) - A$50
  • AU (WA/SA) - A$60

Maybe it's "hardened for australian conditions"

I had a little laptop stand that could also be used like a table to eat in bed or on the sofa, cost me £3.00 in the UK. Stupidly I left it in England, I was looking for one the other day in a home shopping catalogue and the exact same thing was $30.00!!!!

When the GBP was 2.5 : 1 aud those prices would have been on par.

I would imagine it has extra bleaching protection to stop it being damaged in the harsh australian sun. Or perhaps its the Aquis 'spray' inspections fees for the wood.

Alternatively it could be that australia is an island in the middle of a remote ocean.

Or just that Australia is a monopoly in most areas and everyone gets overcharged.

One of those 5 theories should do you

Agree! when rate 2.5 to $ then would be £20 which not a million miles from £17.

It's still same in $'s but we expats do tend to work everything back into £'s!

Makes Oz salaries look very high but downside is if you still hold all your money in £'s then you're stuffed for now!

Roll on 2.5 again :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

10,000 miles is fair comment but 10,000 kms is,quite frankly, taking the piss

I think electronics are roughly the same - some things cost more, others less. Things like LCD TVs, ipods, computer parts, cameras etc.

I'll be in Europe soon so it will be good to get some on the street comparisons.

Stuff that I find really expensive here is hardware (DIY not PC). Things like electrical fittings, screws, fittings, shelf brackets, piping etc. I was pricing up some shelf brackets the other day in Bunnings. The ones that I wanted were $4 each, and I needed 12 - so $48. It pissed me off to see the same thing on the Screwfix website for 80p each. The price of electrical fittings is insane but I am fortunate to have contacts in the trade who can get me stuff for below trade price.
