Some people say that the only state to be in is a vegatative state.

I say VICTORIA!!! That's all.

Absloutely loads of threads on this subject, especially lately!
Completely depends on what you are looking for in terms of work, lifestyle, affordability etc etc
Suggest you associate yourself with the advanced search option!:)

Absolutely depends on what you're after, and of course it's hard to pin that down before you move.

There are loads of update threads in the update forum and people often go into great detail about what their new area is like, these can be very helpful as they give you a decent feel for a place.

For us it's NSW/Sydney as we have family and friends there already and most of the jobs in my industry are based there.

good luck!

I would say Queensland definitely.

Actually it is best if you forget about "which state" - they are after all, pretty artificial lines drawn on a map. All the states have very similar rules and regulations.

Plus, each state is vast. The character and attributes of a state differ as you travel.

So forget about "which state" and think about "which place".

For most types of work your best bet is Sydney or Melbourne, based on size alone.

Just wondering if anyone agree with this - Sydney is good for finding work as there are more job openings; Melbourne is good for studies as it is more educational and cultural; Brisbane is a good for retirement for better weather and lower cost of living compared to Sydney and Melbourne.

Not convinced of this. A recent survey suggested Melburnians pay less than other Australians for many things.

Never understand why more job openings is seen as best place. Surely it is available jobs minus applicants? Ie the unemployment rate.

Re: State to settle??

Everyone looks for the balance that suits them. I like Brisbane because it has enough of most things I have time to enjoy (markets, cafes, architecture, hills, greenery, events, bike paths, galleries and theatre) combined with summer during the day all year round.

For example today was another beautiful mid winter day that would pass for a fantastic summer day in most cities around the world. It is also situated close to other large places and surrounded by mountains, beaches, numerous islands, dams, country towns, rainforest, mountain b&b's, rivers, lovely little tourist towns, resorts, great camping etc, etc.

Most Australian cities have all this in different doses....it is just a matter of finding the one that has the right amounts of each thing to suit your tastes.

It doesn't seem to work that way for some reason. Especially not for new immigrants. It really is a case of throwing as much mud at the wall and seeing what sticks and if you have a smaller wall you will of course miss more often!

:D I think the unemployment rate is a reflection of the percentage who managed to make one stick and that doesn't seem to always follow the philosophy of the big wall ;) That big wall can look mighty small when you have too many throwers....
