Default State ID in Sydney/NSW

Any info about the need of state ID in Sydney/NSW.

State ID is not mentioned among "First Things to do" after the arrival!

You can get an ID card in NSW - a Photo Card. It's handy to have if you don't have a NSW driving licence, costs about $40 from the RTA.

But driving licenses have in reality replaced them. Life without one can be fun with bureacracy.

Oh tell me about it As a non-driver I am now very experienced at pointing out to people that a UK passport is actually a legal form of ID!

Very true I did feel that the OP was thinking more along the lines of official ID cards that some countries insist you must carry, especially looking at his/her location, but I may be wrong.

Oh yeah, def not compulsory but as Ivan says, very useful - especially in the early days of setting everything up and when, on a temp visa, you can't get a driving license.

My dad insisted on all of us kids getting our driving license if only for the ID factor.

Yes, very useful. Many/most pubs and hotels in Sydney now insist on seeing photo ID for entry, irrespective of how old you look. They claim it is something to do with Health and Safety regulations, though I largely suspect it's doorman powertrip myself.

Still, have seen a number of obviously older than 18 persons be turned away because they had no photo ID.

I begged and pleaded to learn to drive as soon as I could, but we were out in the country then and there was no-one to teach me. Dad always said it was a skill I wouldn't need.
Can't afford it now, besides the length of time it takes to get through all the different stages here, we can't afford two cars (and please no-one suggest I drive the Bloke's car, thats tantamount to committing treason!)

Gawd, I'd be chuffed to bits if somebody wanted to see evidence that I was over 18. Don't think I've ever been asked - and I was clubbing at 14.

Head to The Abercrombie on Broadway this Saturday and try to get in with no ID - You'll be as chuffed as you like then!
