Starting your own IT consultancy - where to start
Hello all,
One of my friend is interested in starting a IT consultancy in Sydney. Searching online and this forum, not able to find any specific points related to that.
Some one who have done that earlier, could you please let us know where to start and any list of points or starter guide for this.
Thanks in Advance.

I set one up. IT Consultancy in Perth.
Went to an accountant, gave him the name I wanted to call it. Paid.
2 weeks later I was a LTD PLC.

Another option is to register a company online instead of using an accountant, for instance, http://www.ecompanies.com.au/ and http://www.registeracompany.com.au/ (search google for other options). I haven't set one yet, but I had considered it before moving to Australia in case I went to 'consultant' line instead of full-time job.

LTD PLC.. Guess that isn't the same as the UK?
Also what does PTY after a company mean here?

Might like to take into consideration that a Ltd company isn't the no-brainer that it is in the UK The treatment of tax, capital gains, etc. - together with the costs and paperwork - mean that other structures (like sole trader, family trust) can be better, depending on circumstances/needs. Your friend would need to look closer.

The advantage over Sole Trader for me was the availability of adding other employees at a later date.
Sole traders can have employees ...
Limitation of personal liability from creditor claims is one reason to go for a Pty Limited - though a family trust with a corporate trustee can achieve the same end.
Also commercially it can appear better to prospective clients to be a director of a company.
Good luck with the venture!
