Default Starting a business down under

Hi all,
I am here in Oz as a defacto partner on my girlfriends 457 visa (my skilled migration visa is lodged and in process).

I am currently working full time (fixed term contract) and I am looking in to starting a web based business on the side.

I was hoping for a few pointers.

Does my current visa and / or employment status restrict me from operating a business, obtaining an ABN at all?

I can discuss the tax side of things with an accountant but my initial question is what options (if any) do I have for operating as a business while remaining employed and without being a permanent resident?.
I have looked on the ATO site but have yet to find a definitive answer.

Many thanks
