Standard of living in Aus. compared to UK
Hello all,
We are looking at the possibility of migrating to Australia within the next 3 years.
I work in the IT industry here and I see that similar job in Australia are paid a lot less. Now I know that the cost of living there is less too, so what I want to know is how much should I have to aim earn in Australia to have an equal standard of living to that we have in the UK.

Re: Standard of living in Aus. compared to UK
Hello confused,
I moved from the UK to Perth 18 months ago and was working in IT support earning very
good money. Since arriving in Perth my standard of living has increased 50 fold. In
the Uk the only thing people think about is the money factor. Because that is all
there is to think about. High prices, tax, VAT, council Tax, you get the idea.
Your attitude will change when you come to Australia. You wages may decrease a little
but the quality of life together with the cost of living will far outweigh this. My
current earnings haven't really fallen anyway. In fact I seem to have much more money
to spend than when I was working in the UK.
Cheers.

Re: Standard of living in Aus. compared to UK
I have to agree with you.
I left the UK 3 years ago and my wage dropped by half (pound for pound), however my
standard of living doubled.
I have an appartment that has direct views of the Opera House, and the Harbour
Bridge. Something only a millionaire would own back in the UK.
I also have a pilots license, something that would have cost me double back
in the UK.
so some things are cheaper.
Try 1 pound a pint over here and it's COLD beer!
Remeber you will be earning AUS dollar so you will have a good standard of living.
Avg wage in Sydney is approx A$35k-A$45k. IT skilled people get A$55k+ (more like
A$80k-A$90k).
Compare this to the UK avg GBP17.5K with IT getting GBP35K - GBP 55K.
Even taking the cash out. Australian way of life is fare better than the UK.

Re: Standard of living in Aus. compared to UK
now this is a hard question!! There is a living disparity difference between say
Sydney and Brisbane and again to Ipswich. For an example a 75k$ house in ipswich
would be 140 in Brisbane and 300 in Sydney.(or in your terms salisbury to bath to
London!!!) There are more jobs in sydney but also the total cost of living is about
twice as high as say ipswich or even Brisbane. These are rough rule of thumb guides
only. Then again how do you factor in the lack of miserable cold pissy fog days.
There are other factors involved bu if you want to be a millionaire here its going
to be just as hard as England. Most people live in comfort..... plenty arrive and
fewer go home..

Re: Standard of living in Aus. compared to UK
Thanks for all your help.
I was a bit confused with the referance to Ipswitch, until I realised you didn't mean the city in Norfolk in the UK!!!
You are correct about everything in the UK being money driven. This is one of the things that annoys us here.
I feel much happier knowing that our current standard of life is achievable over there.

Sorry to be picky but the UK Ipswich is in Suffolk (not Norfolk).
It is a town (not a city).
... and it is spelt Ipswich (not Ipswitch)
