Stamp duty is imposed on various documents (and in some cases undocumented acquisitions) such as transfers, agreements to sell real estate, business assets, other property, documented gifts, policies of insurance, mortgages, and motor vehicle licence transfers.

Comes as a bit of shock when you buy a car and then get a bill through a few days later for a whole load of stamp duty!

So far in 7 months I've paid stamp duty on my house, car, mortgage, insurance, not including other document registration and transfer feess to do with the house.

Stamp duty is a State gov tax and each state is different. Go to www.ato.gov.au and type stamp duty into the search box and it will give you links to each state tax office.
