Hi can anyone give me any info on st kilda Melbourne??.My husband has been given sponsorship therebut ive been told its a bit "rough".
Where would the best suberb be to settle,we have two young children and i wont be driving for a while!!!!.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome trendy but expensive area. Full of wealth yet it still retains it's edge from the eighties with prositutes on the streets. Families will step over anyone just to get in.

St. Kilda is no longer rough in my experience. I don't live in Melbourne but visit often and have stayed in St. Kilda a couple of times and wifey and I have walked about in the evenings and later at night in what appeared to be perfect safety. Vibrant might be the word, like a lot of Melbourne.

Some of the buildings there are beuatiful and now expensive. There is a good tram service into the CDB.

In agreement with alistair here...we stayed in St. Kilda, on Alma Road just last year. Jet lag meant we were wandering the streets at all times of the night. We loved it, there are some gorgeous old houses there & if it were anywhere near affordable (& our plans didn't include wanting land for horses) we would take our teenagers there to live without hesitation

Although it's been about 7 years since I was in St Kilda, I wouldn't have any concerns about living there (assuming you can afford it, as as previous posters have suggested it can be a little expensive).

-That being said, it is a stones throw from Melbourne and wouldn't think it would be a huge issue for you.

I recall hearing Katie Langbrook and Dave Hughes talking on the radio last year about the fact that she lived in St Kilda and Dave's comment was "Yes, only Katie, and the prostitutes can afford to live in St Kilda"

If I didn't have kids, then I think it would be a cool place to live for a little while, not sure I'd want to live there long term, but it's got a great vibe about it.

St Kilda's great. Used to have an apartment there. St Kilda has been gentrified and is for the 20/30 something trendies. The edge is gone from St Kilda now. Has become a bit boring compared to what it was like 10 years ago.

St Kilda is not a place I would recommend for families or kids and is mainly geared towards apartment dwelling, upwardly mobile singles. High levels of flat sharing in St Kilda.

Police are everywhere in St kilda whilst outer shitholes are hotbeds for crime, anti social behaviour.

Middle class wealthy families aim for Albert Park, Middle Park and St kilda. Plus other bayside areas no one wants to live in Werribee or Frankston or any of those bogan shitholes.

They are? Hardly ever see any coppers there unless it is during St Kilda festival or when the Grand Prix is on.

Albert Park , Middle Park, yes. Albert Park and Middle Park are quieter and more family friendly than St Kilda.

St kilda has plenty of family friendly housing. Head down to the cafe strips and its full of families on weekends.

It's also full of drunks, junkies, brasses, sex shops, brothels and half-way houses. Sure you get your families visiting on the weekend but they are not locals. You also get the suburban wankers visiting, looking for a fight.

Bollocks St kilda inner bayside is where everyone aims. Hence Why very few aussies other than counsel housing live in outer suburb areas.

Live in a cheap outer suburb 400-500k house and eventually your lucky will run out.
