Default St kilda!

What would st kilda be like to stay for 3 weeks and enjoy a few coffee shops and generally look around the like of berwick etc etc, well anything affordable longer term but within 1hr to city hospital!

We were thinking of holidaying in carrum on the beach and drive around burbs,or would a place on carlise road in st kilda be too much for young family?

cheers

You'd be in the thick of things if you stayed in Carlisle Street in terms of clubs, bars and restaurants. Depending which end you're at you'd also be very close to the pier, beach and Luna Park. The area has a great vibe but can get pretty hectic at night, lots of backpackers and clubbers. Fitzroy Str has had a bit of bad press recently, theres been a few assaults/beatings. So, to be honest it's not the typical sort of place where young families would stay. If you're looking to live around the area then great, but if you're not I would recommend that you just have a day trip to St Kilda and stay more around the areas which you're thinking of living. Berwick and SK are very different.

Carlisle st balaclava or up into caulfield is fine - the st kilda end (from chapel st down into st kilda proper) is not particularly family friendly!! You could also consider anywhere around st kilda east or if you are after a bit of inner city life head along chapel st into Windsor, prahran & south yarra.

No worries dude. Caulfield is a nice family suburb, (although like most places it's fairly pricey now!), so you'd get a good idea of what it would be like to live in Melbourne as opposed to holiday. Good access to the M1 if you want to head down to Berwick and good access to the city, depending when you're coming Spring Carnival starts next month (racing). Depends whether or not the beach is a factor for you though - if it is then Mordialloc is nice, on the beach so has a bit of a holiday feel to it but also good access to the city. Or Williamstown on the other side is pretty cool, as is Port Melbourne, Albert Park, Elwood, Sandringham - to be honest any of the bayside suburbs would be a great base for you to access the city and the wider area. Depends what your budget is really....

You'll be able to do most things on foot around St Kilda, whilst in Berwick you will have to hire a car.

I'd personally have no problem spending 3 weeks with my family there. However I am a dedicated Urbanite.

Why not spend one week in St Kilda or other city locale and two weeks with a car in Berwick or other suburban area.

If I had a choice of two locales It would probably be Carlton or Fitzroy for the city one and Seaford (for want of a better outer beach locale) or similar for the other, as close to the beach as possible.

Samsi n ozzie your pointers have been superb guys!!

I dont want the nightclub life, just nice modern house with a short car journey to beach or even bike ride.

Gonna hire a car for the 3 weeks, cos we need to drive around a few burbs to gain a 12 month let in a modern 3/4x2 unit hopefully!

The prices of some lets are well over $4k for our 3 week let,so cost is a factor, but with a bit of being cheeky and asking for a good price, will swing it for us!

Hmmm try Port Melbourne or even South Melbourne More Upmarket than St Kilda closer to the City, and beaches all the way through.

No worries, hope your trip goes well mate. If you haven't already check out www.stayz.com.au for holiday lets, you should definitely get something decent for much less than 4k on there.

If you are not going to have a car for a while then I would be looking at the city and surrounding suburbs as it will be easy to walk around and there are a lot of parks that you can take the children to.

For the longer term if you are going to be working at a city hospital it will take over an hour to drive from Berwick, my husband has just been in the Alfred Hospital and it took me an hour from the Peninsula to see him last week and that was in non peak traffic, in peak it would be a lot longer.

If working shifts it would be pricey for the parking and running costs to travel from the outer areas. Our trains are not that user friendly at night.

There are a lot of areas which are quite accessible for the city and it depends which hospital you will be at which suburbs would be most suitable. Alfred, its Southern and Eastern, Royal Melbourne you could go Ascot Vale, Pascoe Vale and out to Essendon Moonee Ponds, or over to Point Cook etc.

I am only speaking for me as I hate commuting and I have always worked thirty minutes from work.

Hi margaret
Thanks for replying
We have a weird list of what we want for our 12 month rental!
1hr for wife to travel to work "max" not too far from the sea, great walking n cycling and just a nice suburb with a modern place.

Now we are meant to find this place we will call home within 3 weeks, but in the mean time do alot of chillin and shopping and beaching it!

So we will hire a car for the 3 weeks(until wifey buys one).

Im sure us renting our 3 week stay out of the city would be better suited so we can get the feel of a burb and the prices of houses we eventually can afford!

So maybe best to stick to a rented place in carrum on the beach compared to st kilda for our 3 week stint

Rented place in Carrum will do fine for short stay and actually Aspendale, Edithvale, Chelsea, Bon Beach are not bad suburbs, not keen on Aspendale Gardens but that is because I remember what it was like before they filled the land and developed it. Dropped from the sky suburb in my view.

The above all have access easily to the beach from both beach and non beach side of the railway line. We lived in Edithvale for 11 years when our children were babes and it was great to take them to the beach there. My friend lives right on the beach front at Edithvale so they could nip out the back gate onto the beach, the sea is quite shallow there too.

Cheltenham is a good suburb sort of half way to the city and a lot of good shopping and not that long a commute.

Anywhere beach side of the Nepean Highway and Railway line running out from the city is very nice, pricey but very nice place to live. Good shopping, beach, cafes, restaurants lots of good schools etc.

Have a look at the http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au site and follow the train lines out and you will find all the suburbs.

Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley are nice suburbs, Wheelers Hill these are not near the beach though.

Good luck there is something for everyone and do not forget the other side of the city as it is closer for commuting than the southern side.
