Re: spouse 2nd stage
To further confuse things, I have had two lovely bits of advice from the famous DIMIA helpline - we are hoping to go to the UK for three weeks near the end of next year, before I get the Spouse PR visa.
First phone call - If I return to the UK AT ALL, I will need a new UK police check.
Second phone call - As long as I don't stay there longer than 6 months, I don't need a police check!
I think I'll get one just to be on the safe side!

Maybe it was to stop me travelling on an inoperative visa. Maybe if one was oversas longer and able to get to an Australian embassy/HC then the visa could be granted whilst offshore.

But a visa granted offshore must be evidenced offshore (as your 309 was ceased as soon as the 100 was granted, hence you'd have needed the visa label to travel) - delaying the grant saved you the drama of having to let the Royal Mail take possession of your passport to and from the AHC London. But if the DIMIA case officer thought the 100 had to be granted onshore legally, that's incorrect.

The decision is due 2 years from date of application, not temp visa grant or landing date. DIMIA do not grant PR before that date. I received my forms 3 months before the due date and sent them off 2 weeks later. I was granted PR the first day back from holiday after the due date.

Just for info (specifically my own, but also for anyone else in the same position as myself) - Can anyone who has successfully applied for the defacto visa onshore confirm or deny that they keep the same case officer throeughout the application i.e. will it be most likely that the same person assesses both the first and second stage??
kind regards
