my hubby keeps saying to me what the hell are you going to do when we get there as i hate spiders and hyperventilate at the mention
i tell him im fine and will be sorted by the time we get there (next year with a bit of luck)
but an hour ago there was a humungous one on the stairs and i froze i was calm though but couldnt move or breathe
now im a bit worried myself
i know they are big in oz but are there really as many as people say ?
if i dont see them too often ill be fine

Hi Jan,

Yep, can't deny that they can get rather big but I really don't think there's one lurking around every corner. I've seen posts on here from people who haven't had a huntsman encounter in over a year.... I've come to the conclusion that they're there, they aint going anywhere so we'll have to deal with them when we see them. I'm pooping myself at the thought but it's not going to change anything...we'll just have to get on with it.

So, basically you'll be fine. I think if we only have the occasional episode then we can cope with it, right?

Hi ,i know how you feel,not with spiders though
my big fear is snake's or anything long and wiggly :D
I'm trying acupuncture this week then I'm off down the pet shop,to see if it works! I'll let you know.Lor

Oz has the biggest, the ugliest and most venomous spiders in the world and the country is teeming with them because the large numbers of flies in Oz means they have an unlimited food source. Theres enough venom in one funnel web bite to kill 20 men. In OZ you will be living in the Spiders habitat so you will have to get used to living with them.

You can buy surface sprays that kill spiders for up to 6 months.

We rarely see spiders in the house, though we do have a 'pet' huntsman named "Spidey" who is now playing a game of 'guess where I am today'. Spidey is left alone because his job is to catch any little'uns.

Spidey is not welcome in the bedroom - if he ever finds his way in there he will be thrown outside.

We live out on acreage and find we have lots of spiders wanting to visit.

I spray outside under the alfresco area with surface spray.

I have a can of spray by the back door on the window sill.
One at the side door.
One in the cupboard in the laundry.
And one in the kitchen cupboard.
Then if it happens to be a redback or something gross, my size 6 happens to be quite handy, whether it is on or off my foot.

Last year my poor dog was in the vets for 2 days after being bitten by a spider. She was in a real state within a very short time.

I always used to leave the spiders in the UK, but I dont risk it here, and although I don't like killing things, they sure do seem to be in high numbers here.

Hi jan, there is no point in saying you wont see any, cause you will, but you just have to spray round everywhere, and then you wont get many. My fear is the ssss, cant even say the word, if i see one im going home.
But the thing you really have to worry about are the bloody mossys, they eat you alive.

To be honest i don't think i see spiders any more frequently than i did in the UK.

I was going to resist answering another thread about the dreaded 'spiders' in OZ - but sadly I cant!

I TOO absolutely HATE SPIDERS - and I mean HATE! Just the thought of seeing a huntsman sends a shiver up my spine :scared: And as for a funnel web - think I'd have a heart attack!!!! But the honest truth is - living in Australia you have to be prepared for the fact that you just MIGHT see a really big deadly spider - because they can kill!

Thankfully, and I mean that, we have NOT seen any BIG ones since being here - 10 months now. Even if I see one today - I consider myself lucky, but in saying that, we have chosen were we live very carefully.

If we go to the OUTBACK or in the RAIN FOREST in Cairns, or live on the verge of a forest, then the risk of seeing one/having them in our house will intensify. Our friends live on the edge of the Rain Forest and they are frequent visitors in their home - as is everything else :scared: They too dont like them - but say once you have seen a few - your fear decreases - lets hope they are right eh!!!!

Please dont overly worry, your fear cannot be worse than mine believe me!!

Like someone else has said, just make sure you have plenty of those insect sprays all around the house!!!! :eek:

We saw really BIG ones in our UK house just before leaving at the end of October last year! Boys took a photos of them just to prove we have really big ones in the UK too - the fact that they are not 'deadly' - who gives a .... they are still big and scary!!!

forgot about the mossys mind you i can handle them i just dont like spiders they watch you with their beedy eyes and wait till you least expect them

Anyway with reference to your question as I spoke to Gary about it, Karen is seriously scared of spiders and was really worried about them and the size of them before we got here, but to be honest in the 4 months we have been here, one thing we have noticed is that the streets are overrun with them all and they are all huge in size, in fact if wasn't for all the snakes eating them we would be seriously worried!!!!!!! :scared: :scared:

Do not panic! We have been here 5 months now on a semi rural property of 1.5 acres. Seen only 3 or 4 small household harmless spiders in the house. In the shed next to the chook pen there are half a dozen or so huntsmen which just sit in their webs waiting for flies. We have red-backs living under some old building materials at the bottom of the garden who just do their thing and we leave them to their business. They are very poisonous but not aggressive at all. Also have a lizard in the garden who just hidess from us. So no problem at all.
By the way what a super country this is! Not one winge have we got. People, food, quality of life, living standards, cleanliness - you name it is in our opinion superior to the UK. Even happier to pay the higher income taxes as all the other bills are cheaper. All you waiting for visas hang in there it is worth it.
