speeding tickets.

9pm pitch black, unlit road and boom I get flashed! by a van hiding in bushes. annoyingly, I saw the red ir light miles back and slowed but stayed around 85 thinking that it had already got me so there would have been no point slowing. it may have got the car behind as it went off much later than I thought it should have. but in case it didnt, what can I expect?

I'm on a 457, UK licence as I havent bothered to get a WA one yet, annoyingly I planned to on tuesday!

anoyn know how the demerits would work being I don't have a licence?

not hugely bothered about a fine... anyone know what I can expect if it was me?

85 in a what? 40, 50, 60 zone? 80 zone? How many km over the limit makes a difference.

Also the fact that it's double demerits this weekend...

My friend in SA put her dad's name down as the driver (lives in Wales - wasn't here at the time). They sent letter and a fine over so she paid the fine off but no points :-)

Appeal. Husband got his first letter about speeding and appealed the fine he got a caution and that was that. It took about 10 weeks until we received the letter this week. No points either
Will email you the vic details not sure WA ones though...

Get caught out pulling that stroke and you risk much more than a fine and a few demerits

At only 5 kms over, you should only get a fine (about $150 I think) and no demerits. Any demerits you do accrue will likely be added to your WA licence once you get it

Is she related to Chris Huhne?

85 in an 80 zone, that is pathetic. I dont mind these revenue fines being handed out when you are maybe 10 or 15 over but 5 is ridiculous.

Thankfully not:)

An Aussie guy I know put his mum down as the driver - she had just DIED and was in a different state!!!

Yes, a very different state.

I got points and a fine on the A45 in Coventry for doing 43 in a 40. I agree, pathetic.

Re: speeding tickets.

Well you should have contested it because in the UK they have a 10% plus i think 2 mph tolerance so you were incredibly unlucky. ;)

Who can be arsed contesting, I certainly can't. It was 14 years ago, the night the Princess of Wales died to be precise. That is why I won't ever forget it.

Re: speeding tickets.

I would certainly have contested it as virtually no tolerance was given which is almost unheard of. I was camping in Wales and it rained.

actually that is a myth - some forces do this but it isn't a right. And nowadays very few forces give this.

I got fined (no points) a few weeks ago doing 107 on the Mitchell Freeway. I've since been told they only allow a 3km tolerance.

I also got done for speeding on the interstate in Montana, many years ago - where there was no speed limit. A dubious honour......

Re: speeding tickets.

Its not a myth, most forces still give a sensible tolerance. My sister in law in Geelong got fined by the same overzealous cop twice for 2ks over, how does that do anything other than create a hatred for the Police?

Do you think drink drivers should be let off for being a little over the limit?

chris955 Apr 8th 2012 11:32 pm

Re: speeding tickets.

Why on earth would i think that ? I would tighten the drink driving laws.

My point being, regardless of the offence, there has to be a starting point. I agree that a couple of km's over probably deserves a warning rather than a ticket, but lets face it, how many people actually take a warning on board?

Most people on here drive and on occasion probably speed. When you're caught out, just pay up and don't whinge about how unfair things are.

Alternatively..........don't speed

If you saw 85 on the speedo then you were probably doing about 82 or 83 - ADRs do not allow the speedo to read less than the actual speed but allow them to read as much as 16kph over!

The production shall be deemed to conform to this Regulation if the following relationship between the speed indicated on the display of the speedometer (V1) and the actual speed (V2) is observed:

In the case of vehicles of categories M and N: (passenger cars, light trucks)

0 <= (V1 – V2) = 0.1 V2 + 6 km/h;

The 10% rule in the UK is a complete myth. Some traffic officers use it but it is entirely at there discretion.

I got caught here in Perth doing 79 in a 70. I got a $75 fine. It said no points as I was less than (just) 9kmh over the limit.

That would be 15 years ago then, in 1997. I was doing my one and only 6 month stint of northern Ireland at the time, very memorable.

Re: speeding tickets.

I got my fine in Geelong doing an alleged 67 in a 60. It stated that giving the compensation I was clocked doing 63. About $160 fine and one point.........

First and only ever speeding ticket in my life. I was overtaking a ute that was weaving and driving at 35 in the 60 zone. It was a dual carriageway as well. I just paid up and my daughter frequently reminds me of it. It definitely stops me from speeding intentionally and I check more frequently.

Unlike the idiot B-double that sat 5 feet off my bumper in torrential rain on the Midland Highway today. I was already doing the limit and the conditions were horrendous. Thankfully he pulled over in a village to take a call.......never been so relieved.

Unfortunately I have become a bit of an expert on this :frown:

Moved to Brisbane end of Feb 2011, bought a car 15th March while staying in temporary aprtment in The Valley, rego was down at that address as I hadn't sorted a rental yet. On 15th March this year I renewed the rego at my current address.

Three days later I received a letter titled " Notice of accumulation of demerit points - never held a driver licence" telling me I was suspended from holding a Qld Licence for three months as I had accumulated 7 points in less than a year.

I was mystified as I had never receieved a speeding notice, then it all began to click

Turns out I had 3 speeding fines that had been sent to my old address, totalling 5 points and $433, because they hadn't been paid in time I now owed $631 :frown::frown:

Had to go to a shopfront and get my UK licence put in the system, I can now drive again.

Not sure about WA but in Qld it goes like this

0 to 13km/hr over limit = $133 and 1 point
14-20km/hr over limit = $200 and 3 points
20-30km/hr over limit = $433 and 4 points

and so on

Re: speeding tickets.

I received one in Feb in Melbourne.

I was doing 107 in a 100 limit. Spoke to people at work and as long as its your first offence (or been 3 years since), it was under 10k's and you've a clean licence AND admit it was your fault - you can send a letter to have the fine reviewed for an official warning.

Three people I spoke to at work (Ozzies) had all done this and got let off with a warning. I was forwarded the template and changed my details accordingly. I'm hoping I will get let off with a warning too.

Check the WA Police site for similar.
