Specifically how is Australia behind the UK ?
I keep reading about how Australia is behind the UK/Europe/USA by anything from 2 to 10 years. I am interested in specifically how you consider Australia to be behind in terms of attitudes, work practices, consumer goods available (not interested in the availability of Walkers crisps though ).

Guys, count me in for pizza Polly, I had some good cheese at the weekend, so will bring that along for extra topping!
Ben&Pam - it really depends on what you're used to being readily available now. I find a lot, not all, things can be found, its more of a question of knowing where to get them as they may not be in the 'normal' place for you.

I don't think Oz is behind anywhere (although it's been a few years since I was there).
You can get the latest electronic stuff. You can't get some food stuff, but then it is a different country.
One contentious issue would be attitudes towards women. However, whenever Australia is analysed, what is overlooked is the difference between the cosmopolitan nature of the big cities compared to the middle of nowhere places. However, I suspect this simply reflects similar differences in the UK.
Likewise the Sydney Mardi Gras would not particularly suit some outback towns.
(The only genuine thing that I remember Oz was pants on was how bad the TV adverts were.)

Aussie is Britain in the 70's Id say judging by some of the terms still in use like 'layby', Jif (now called a pathetic 'Cif' in UK), no teletext on tv's as standard, pantries - they went whey out in the 70's.

There are differences between Australia and the UK in terms of employment law (Statutory Maternity Pay being an obvious one). Whether that means Australia is behind entirely depends on your view of the British system.
Paul - completely agree with you about Aus tele!

This is a big one that amazed me when I found out. However, it also highlights the way the UK has been affected by EU law. Again good or bad is opinion.

Plumbing wise. Oz, (well WA), is at least 25 years behind the UK.
I wish it wasn't, but it's a fact!

I actually don't like the attitude of many male Brits either towards women and in some places thought it was worse.
