sound proofing a tin roof!
anyone done this?
after some pointers of what to use and how to do it as it is so noisy when it rains. we have to get some more standard insulation to go in (at the mo just the bedrooms are done) but even with this in the bedroom it is still extremely loud.

We have a steel roof and I love the sound of the rain, rain is such wonderful stuff, when you have lived through a couple of droughts there is no such finer sound.
We have lots of insulation and can still hear it. Once summer comes in Victoria he subject becomes "do you think it will rain today"?

I'm with 4Margaret! We have a lot of insulation (some sort of lining against the roof and acres of pink batts) but still hear it and boy is it ever welcome. It is always going to be loud I think but you do get used to it, if it ever rains!

What type is the "standard insulation" used? If it is not something like CSR Bradford Soundscreen, this maybe the cause of you still getting noise. Correct ceiling materials, like CSR Gyprock Soundcheck will also deaded the noise.

Tin roof! i will never understand why houses are built with a tin roof. Mine isn't tin, but the rain and wind kept me awake all night, nevermind having a tin roof

Re: sound proofing a tin roof!
there are some types of insulation that go againts the roof panels and are supported from below, normally fitted during instulation how ever could be fitted after if you have access from below.
The noise factor is the main reason i would always have a tiled roof, also easier to repair after orange sized hail damage, however on the plus side for metal roofs the hail dont normally smash a hole in the metal roofs and let loads of rain in causing water / rain damage, so swings & round about really & if you dont care about a dinted metal roof you can just leave it.

We have an Anticon blanket immediately below the roof, which was put there when the house was built. We only hear the rain through the vents over the showers or through the windows.

Nu-Shooz - we have a tin roof because it sometimes hails and hail stones break roof tiles, then roof lets in rain, then house gets very wet.

I grew up in Brisbane with tin roofs and this post has made me laugh so much. Have you all been in to shops and asked for advise on this? If so, what was the reaction?

Sound check Gyprock .
resilient mount clips under your Gyprock, would or could
have reduced the noise quite considerably

Thanks to those who replied with helpful suggestions
Being in the South West of WA we get loads of rain at this time of year....
While I agree it is quite nice to hear, when it really thunders down you cant hold a conversation as it is deafening
ps. I'm not a newbie MM, nor am i a wimp!

Why put up with noise what you don't have to, i just see it as an improvement not as being a wimp.
Same as the single glazing fitted as standard, double and triple glassing is better.
If it wasn't for people seeking a better way, we would all still be living in caves etc. but with no global warming etc. (May Be).
