I didn't think the chocolate in Oz was that bad. Let's face it UK chocolate isn't that good. Didn't the Europeans try to make us call it "vegelate" as it is so low in cocoa solids?

Anyway, nothings as bad as a US Hershey bar, has anyone tried one? I reckon they must put something in it that I'm allergic to because whenever I get a taste I just want to literaly throw up. Then I get a headache.

I was about to write this response when I read yours! You are right - cadbury's is so low in cocoa that in Europe it would not qualify for the title 'chocolate'.
There are some great chocolate makers here who use Belgian chocolate as a base - try the choc shops in Oxford St Sydney! My wife is actually a chocolate maker and is planning to start a little business making high quality hand made chocolates (70% cocoa stuff - real chocolate) when we retrun to the UK. She tells me that there is no-one in the whole of Australia who actually makes chocolate from the raw cocoa beans. All chocolate 'made' here, even by the most expensive hand made companies, is actually just melted down Belgian chocolate reshaped and flavoured. Sorry for rambling on, we talk about chocolate a lot at home. Did you know real chocolate is not actually that bad for you? Its the animal fat Cadbury's use to reconstitute the cocoa powder that makes our kids fat - real chocolate has cocoa powder and top quality vegetable oils, such as palm oil or cocoa oil, and a much lower fat content..... blah blah blah.

Seriously, friend have requested I bring out TCP, cos they just can't get it (in Perth anyway)and sudocream (the zincy stuff), for the sprogs, which is available, but only in very small pots. So BB, stock up, manys the time you have had a really rashy arse I bet, you should change the blade more often or at least stop Mrs BB touching up her hawaian!

Finch,
Are you headed to Perth, we could do a deal on trading recipies...maybe a future English/Indian takeaway?
Do you mean Brazilian? (hawaian!!)

I love that 75% stuff. I get a hit off it, a bit like a can of O.P. Bundy and coke......:)

Capital radio in the morning, I will miss Chris Tarrants ramblings.
I cant wait to snigger at the awful weather reports when I am lying by the pool and it is snowing back in the UK! You can get most of the radio stations on your PC via the internet.

Another mad item - PG tips, other bags are not the same !!

TIna

Hi All!

If you like strong tea, like PG, then you must take loads!! the tea in oz is really weak!! even when they think they've made it strong, its still like gnats p***!! also, whilst still here in UK, I have to send my 'Rellies' out boxes of 'Ready Brek' and 'Smith's Salt'n'vinegar Chip Sticks as they really miss them and cant get anything nearly the same in oz.
Apart from as much PG pyramids as I cant get through customs, I will take loads of Lenor. Fabric softener doesnt seem to be used much in oz, as i was told their water is a lot softer than ours in uk so they dont need it. Thats fine if you like bathtowels like sandpaper!! and clothes all rough! but if like me ,you like towels to be soft and 'fluffy' then take fabric sofeners too!

Cheers!

Agree about the chocolate, it's not the same, but then I don't eat it every day.

I'll miss my breakfast cereal, weetabix, and real kellogs stuff, the Oz Weetbix are pretty yuk, and like Cadburys, I think the Kellogs recipes are different.

As for TV, it's got to be bike racing on Eurosport.

Radio, I'll miss Virgin, desperately hoping to get a cable link to listen on the internet, but they still seem to have silly download restrictions.

A Curry solution for those in around Brisbane. After several "Aussie Curries", basically stew with a spoonful of curry powder and overboiled rice, we found a restaurant on the Sunshine Coast called Hathi. It is run by Indians and food is V good, they do take out and eat in. Probably the best we have found here, they even have a proper Tandoori oven. Its really funny as it is always full of Pommies. Average curry $13.

I'll miss my lovely cottage in Ashdown Forest, which we are going to rent - just in case it doesn't work out. I'll miss the sense of community in our village. I'm going to miss the T.V. too, not a lot though.

Proper Marmite, Harveys Bitter.

Sorry but you are going to Australia WHY? your place sounds like heaven

tinaj Nov 3rd 2002 9:19 am

She probably forgot to tell you that it rains for 3/4 of the year.
Sitting in a cottage watching the rain and sleet is not much fun!
I guess living in Canada you can relate to that !!

dotty Nov 3rd 2002 8:18 pm

I guess the obvious answer to that is that for 3/4 of the year in Brisbane it is so hot you dont even WANT to go outside.

dpr21 Nov 3rd 2002 8:54 pm

Then come to Perth - much better weather

Back to the important topic of chocolate it is really bad in Oz, tastes more like cooking chocolate (some strange additive to stop it melting I believe).
I thought the sister-in-law was joking that it was so awful so we brought some Lindt chocolate from the super market while we were out there (if you haven't tried it before you leave for Oz then do, some of the best on the market!) it was absolutely disgusting.
In the end we found the only place we could get proper English chocolate was from Sanctuary Cove (about 1hr drive from Brisbane). Don't be fooled by the wrappers which may look the same the contents isn't. ;)
Anyway enough of my ranting must go and visit the vending machine....
Annie

Aero chocolate in aus is British made... I hate Australian chocolate, funny taste (I thought it maybe the milk?? as I find the milk here not as full/creamy tasting )... anyway Aero is shipped in (British made), and you can get After eight mints too .. only two choc's that I know of anyway which is made in Britain and shipped here, instead of being made in Australia.

cheers:)
