Re: Some realities of Perth.

We visited Perth last year and not once did I see someone barefoot, I think initially I would have found it bizarre because for us Brits its not the NORM too damn cold:rofl: But as with everything else in life you get use to it and take no notice, not too sure if I will be doing it myself mind you, I have enough hard skin as it is without building up more, OH is always reminding me to get the angle grinder onto my feet, sorry was that too much information:confused: :D Also I did find several markets open on a Sunday (dont ask me where they were) not that I'm a shopaholic but for those of you who are, you can always get your fix that way and become a sunday marketaholic!!!! Jokes aside, yes we are all different and had I not been tolerant here in Spain with tradesmen, domestic service providers and estate agents I would have up sticks and moved back to the UK long ago, its not easy but nobody said it would be. Just give it a little longer and relax, there must be some positives to work on! Good luck with whatever you dcide, life's too short ;)

did you know it is good for you to wear no shoes when i was in goa india,I was told we have acupressure points on our feet, thts why reflexology is, good for you........i was told to start walking round bare foot as it stimulated the points which aids good health.

I think the uk is very materialistic, hence shop shop shop, i do like shopping but dont need sundays surely if you really want to shop you hve another 6 days to do it, if you work 6 days and only have sundays i am sure its better to just chill than shop.!! life is about spending time together sitting down and enjoying playing with the kids, far to many kids in the uk get turfed out to play outside , they dont care what their kids get up to.As parents are stressed with life in this fast pace of life in the uk, this is where they end up becoming angry little monsters as they end up answring their parents back have no respect for them and become tareaways.........most kids in britain are like this......little chav's.............I was told a family came back from perth because their son couldnt buy sports clothes that he liked with baseball hats there as kids are more happy in perth to go with the flow why doesnt the brit kid just adapt.he hasnt got any chav to keep up with in perth., so he wanted britain back!!!!...sad hey!......not slating the original post just stating why we leave britain...................hey my son has just ran in from taking the dogs for a walk, scared stiff, he has just been told why there was so many police where hewas walking the dog, as there has just been a murder in a house by the park........so must get off here.............britain is great hey!:(

I think some of the comments about the OP's points rather make his case. The fact that someone would like to be able to shop on Sundays shouldn't be of any concern to anyone else: many people want to have the facility without being "shopaholics". Folk who work five or six days have to rush around at inconvenient times if denied it, for starters.

As for bare feet, I saw plenty of those in the supermarkets in Manly ad I have to say that the sight of filthy, calloused hoofs trailing round the deli counter pretty revolting. It also explains why so many of the carpets in houses for sale are absolutely disgusting....

Aargh...!!!

Our next door neighbour has what you'd think would be a nice cream carpet... But no... I have never in my life seen anything like it... It is the most disgusting, covered in stains, filth, etc... And it's a rental...!

That's just a little misleading!

why not compare :
a) Perth - Sydney (3,300km) return including taxes ($500 with Virgin Blue), as a percentage of Aus median income ($46,210) = 1.1%
b) London - New York (5,500km) return including taxes (£320 with Delta), as a percentage of UK median income (£23,244) = 1.4%

So, the London - New York flight is nearly 70% further in terms of distance....yet its only 25% more expensive that Perth - Sydney in real terms.

I cannot care if shops were open 7 days a week or not all the better for convinience if you need something though, but i couldnt care if theyre not as sundays here never used to be open, not all shops are open still either, as its a day of rest and should be, I think rather than go back to scotland why not try another part of australia, brisbane is lovley, faster pace of life.but still laid back when it wants to be.I loved brisbane.I think once back to scotland you will realise the reasons you left, if not i am pleased for you with what ever disision you decide on.But moving to brisi or melbourne, it wouldnt cost too much for a flight to have a break, as everything is more over the east side.
that would drive me nuts having a dirty carpet, even though i am for bare feet as its good , i am not keen on carpets getting dirty, but to be quite honest dirty shoes can make carpets dirty, perhaps keep the bare feet but get tiles!!!

Re: Some realities of Perth.

Its not many moons ago you couldnt go shopping anywhere in england on a sunday and people didnt complain then even now its only 10-4. Also you couldnt get alcohol until 7pm from an offie,so whats the big deal now! In any case perth city is open on a sunday and in my eyes even in england you have to drive to shop in most cases in uk and perths rail network still runs on a sunday dont it?
The shoe issue i just dont get, there are 100 times worst things you see in england on a daily bases that gets up your nose!
I suppose if we have nothing to moan about though life would be pretty boring.

Re: Some realities of Perth.

Well I for one am glad that they decided to post their personal ,absolutely valid experiences of Perth. I notice that some of the people who have rallied against the OP are not even living in Perth, and so how they can claim that none of these things is important until they have to experience them day after day, confuses me.
Everybody on these forums has to face facts, whether they like it or not. Australia is a different country, although a large portion of the population is decended from the U.K. This gives it, in my opinion if I'm allowed, the feeling of a different country, not completely unlike America, but with some British undertones. Sometimes I get a feeling of comfortable familiarity, and other times I pine for some things to be done like they were "back home". All the people who shout "well move back to the U.K then" evertime someone has a problem with something in Oz should wind their necks in. It's everybody's right to express what they think (within reason) without fear of being maligned or shouted down.

Yes, the cost of living here isn't as cheap as some people like to make out. Yes, my rates bill is half what it would have been in the U.K, but then I'm paying $16,000 a year more in income tax than I would be in the U.K.
Yes, petrol is only $1.20 ish a litre, but then it costs me 3 times as much to but the secondhand car to put it in (by the way, last time I checked a 1997/8 Barina for example was going for about $7000 in a car yard. Same in U,K costs about 500 quid, before you all start posting links to carsales.com.au).

People walking about in bare feet doesn't annoy me, but there is no way I, or any of my family will be doing it while I have a say. I like the fact that shops are open on sunday here. It doesn't mean that I feel compelled to vist them, but I like having the option. If you're worried about people being made to work on sundays for no extra money, phone John Howard and Joe Hockey and take the IR case up with them.

And please, please, please, can we stop using the argument of "but there are great beaches"! There are only so many times you can go to the beach in a period of time before it becomes boring. Yes, if we could all afford Jet Ski's, boats, and waterski's, then I'm sure we'd have lots more fun, but the though of moving away from all my friends and family so I can sit on a pile of sand week in and week out, with a crappy "sausage" in my hand isn't exactly what the dream is all about.

I'm not saying I'm not happy here, and I intend to say, having been here 2 years already and feeling settled. But if people can't stop pointing and laughing at others because they don't like something and dare to express it on here, then really all you're doing is making it harder for others to post their concerns, fears, and opinions.

And by the way, all I smell when I close my eyes and breathe deeply is car fumes and a bush fire somewhere. Australia doesn't have the monopoly on fresh, clean air. It is available to people in the U.K too.......

Again this is for the want of better words " Your Perception" is it not?

No, you havent understood, what I was saying was these are someone's perceptions of Perth NOT realities as such and therefore the thread title is misleading.

Correct, people did indeed vote against Sunday opening of shops, and like someone else said, thank god for that. It is so nice to see large groups and families out and about in the parks having picnics and playing games with the kids rather than traipsing round the shops or stuck in front of the TV. We were amazed on Father's Day just how busy places were with families enjoying the day - in the UK we'd give our dads a card and that was it - here family seems much more important, which is how it should be.

If people want endless shopping hours and days then why not move to Melbourne or Sydney in the first place?

All good points and nicely made. Cant rememeber who made the orginal post, but blimey its caused a Caffafull, well done to them for opening the portal.

Now Im off back to my freezing NZ life where we have black beaches with big rips. I LONG to sit on a pile o warm squeaky white sand and dash into the Ocean again...... that ones for you anawana! Hope you like it. he he

Re: Some realities of Perth.

it really gets on my goat when people are so patronising as to question
whether someone researched into coming to perth, course they bloody researched, you don't know what a place is really like until you have lived there.
also the driving here is bloody murder, quite literally, there's people killed on the roads every week, the driving in perth bares no comparison to the uk.
no manners,no road sense,no driving skill and quite frankly a total disregard for other road users.
