Wonder if anybody can help. If I have only 18 months training & experience in an SOL occupation (without certificates), would this satisfy a skilled visa assessment. Or what is the minimum requirement. Thanks in advance for any advise offered.

depends on how many points your occupation is worth. Another point to note if that time includes training to get you to the 'skilled' level then only the time after you reached that level is likely to be counted as recent experience. It also depends on what your assessing body requirements are.
