Hi Jack,

I am getting ready to apply, in the near future, to the 189 skilled independent visa. I am not an English native speaker so, at the moment, I am focusing on preparing to reach 7 in writing, as I am struggling in this part. All the other parts I scored 7 plus in a previous test, which is the minimum required to have my qualification assessed.
I worked as a Social Worker for 7 years until 2012. I will probably apply for employment assessment as well, considering that I might get points for proficient English. I know you didn't do this part in your process but do you know if the AASW would consider the entire period of experience I have or only from the past 10 years, according to DIBP criteria?

Thank you so much in advance for your attention and good luck with the results of your visa application. Hope you will be granted before Christmas

Hi Maol.

My understanding is that the AASW will only count any experience as a social worker as skilled experience. So if you have 7 years experience after you got your social work qualification (that the AASW recognises) that should count. If you have unqualified experience in the sector (such as a social work assistant or care manager) then that wouldn't count.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jack,

Yes, I have post qualification experience as a Social Worker so I'm glad to hear I have a chance to claim points for that.
Thank you very much for helping me to clarify this and also for your quick response.

All the best.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the really really late response. I had a baby and have been pre occupied with the new baby to sort myself out!

Okay so has anyone been granted their positive assessment by the AASW? Also, is there anyone here with the old school qualification like me the Post graduate diploma in social work? I'm 10 years qualified and I'm at management level here, British (English speaking) so i'm unsure as to whether I should go for IELTs or not!?

Any advice anyone? Also some guidance on how long it all took would be fantastic.

Many thanks

Hi. Congrats on your baby!

I had my positive assessment back in June after a wait of just under 20 weeks. I think they’re taking more like 22 weeks now. Not sure about the old qualifications as mine is a Masters. AASW can probably advise if you ring them.

Most people only do IELTS to get additional points for the visa application so you’ll probably need it for that reason rather than to prove your English as a native speaker. IELTS is fine with some preparation.

I’m currently waiting for my visa grant (provided I haven’t made any major errors!). Did IELTS in Jan, sent skills assessment at the same time. Then did EOI in June and lodged visa in June with 65 points. Did police checks and medicals beginning of August. Quite a few visas lodged in June are starting to be granted now so hoping mine comes through in the next 2/3 weeks

Ah amazing well done! Okay just so I have this right does that mean you’ve applied for a visa for permanent residence or is this for a visa to work over there? Would you mind telling me the costs involved? So in terms of IELTs is that to get more points to live there permanently as opposed to getting a visa via an employers?

Sorry if I’m not making sense, I’m a bit sleep deprived!!

I hope your visa gets granted soon.

Many thanks

Yes I’ve applied for a 189 permanent residency visa. So that’s to live and work via skilled migration. I don’t know much about the other visas but I’m sure there may be social work opportunities for employer sponsored visas. This way just made sense for us because we plan to emigrate permanently assuming all goes well. My plan is to find a job when I’m there hopefully in around August next year. I’ll start looking when I get the visa through.

The IELTS gives me 20 additional visa points which takes me to 65 points when points for age and qualification are factored in. I’m not claiming points for experience as I had less than 3 years when I applied but you can get points for 3+ years of skilled experience.

The visa for me and my wife cost about £3300. Medicals £600. Police checks £90. IELTS £160 and skills assessment just over £500.

The whole thing came in at just over £4700 including skills assessment postage etc.

That’s brilliant thank you. I really hope it all comes through for you soon.

In terms of your aasw assessment, did you have to submit like a personal statement? I’ve got the iqa course information form filled in and a letter from each employer stating I worked for them etc.

No I didn’t have to do a personal statement. I think if you do the skilled employment assessment you may have to do one though. All the info should be on the AASW documentation. Looks like you’ve made a good start.

Thanks so much. I hope your visa comes soon and with any luck we’ll all be practicing in Australia in the future!

Hi all, I'm new to this forum so apologies for jumping in on your thread! I have recently qualified as a social worker in the UK (I did a Masters degree) and am wanting to emigrate to Australia as soon as I would be practically able to. I have read this entire thread and was hoping someone might be able to answer a few of my questions.

1. I am currently employed in Child Protection. I would like to emigrate ASAP and was hoping to start the process when I finish my ASYE in 1 years time. This means I would have roughly two years post qualifying experience (I have 5 years pre qualifying experience in various statutory front line roles, but not sure if this counts). Would I realistically be able to find a job with this much experience?

2. I have read that some agencies pay some of the visa costs ect and ideally I would like to go down this route. Does this really exist and as has anyone emigrated in this way?

3. Do most people emigrate and then find a job once they have moved, or get offered a job prior to moving? Again - I would really like to leave the UK knowing I have a job to start once I have moved.

4. Which areas in Australia is there the biggest need for CP social workers?

Any other tips and advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

I think it depends on what type of visa you are applying for. I'm pretty sure pre qualifying experience doesn't count on any visa unless it's carried out in the country you're applying to.

You might be best maybe narrowing down which area you want to move to and then investigate their rules and requirements?

Thank you for replying. From what I’ve researched so far I don’t think my pre-qualifying experience would be taken into account.

I’d like to find out whether anyone has got a job (even a temporary one) offer before going to Australia, without having a significant amount of post qualifying experience? I’m finding it difficult to find agencies in the uk that specialise in recruiting workers for overseas work. The jobs that I have seen advertised seem to offer lots of financial support with flights, visas ect but I’m not sure how realistic an option this is for me.

Have a good read of Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection and work out first whether you qualify for a visa.
Pointless trying to get a job is you do not fit any of the visa categories. The best to go for is the 189 which does not tie you t any employer or state.
A 457 requires sponsorship by an employer, and is temporary, but will not exist much longer, a new temporary visa comes in next year.

Very few agencies in the UK recruit for jobs like this, if you want sponsorship you are better off contacting Aus employers directly.

My 189 visa was granted this morning

Lodged on 29th June.

Just handed my notice in at work!

I can’t answer those questions above about the jobs but my plan is to start looking and applying in the 2 months or so prior to my arrival and see what happens. I’m in adults. I’ll keep posting in the thread about what I experience if people find it useful.
