Perth bakes in record heat
By Paul Graham
December 26, 2007 20:20

Perth has had its hottest December day on record, according to weatherzone.com.au. The city baked under sunny skies and scorching northerlies that lifted the mercury to 43.7 degrees shortly before 2pm. It was the second day in a row above 40 degrees and the warmest two day period for December. A weak sea breeze struggled to provide relief, only managing to bring the temperature back to the 40 degree mark by 4pm.

Cooler, southwesterly winds will provide relief from the extreme heat on Thursday. The city is expected to reach 33 degrees, but the onshore winds will mean higher humidity levels creating sticky conditions. Over the next week, temperatures will begin to rise as winds tend around to the north once more. Next Wednesday could see Perth reaching 39 degrees.

Wet Christmas for eastern QLD
By Hannah McEwan
December 26, 2007 15:52

Santa bought record breaking rainfall and cool temperatures to parts of eastern QLD yesterday, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Mackay received 87mm which is their most rain in ten months and the most rain on record for Christmas day since 1956.
134mm of rain was dumped at Mahrigong in the Central West of the state, which is the most rain for 32 years for the area. The 24 hour total also broke a 56 year December record.

Temperatures were down to nine degrees below average yesterday in cool southeasterly winds. Toowoomba recorded a high of 23 degrees, five below the December average.

The rain was caused by a moist and unstable atmosphere associated with a low pressure trough. Rain and storms are expected for most of the eastern half of the state until the weekend with dry weather expected for central areas just in time for some New Years celebrations.

44 degrees in Perth yesterday, the hottest December day on record apparently

Which is strange as I'm sure it was the coldest only a few short weeks ago....

It has been a couple of degrees cooler here thankfully

Keep your eyes on my thread -I'll post updates there when I can(currently running 2 computers a blackberry and 2 mobiles so there may be a delay!!!) At the moment it looks like VERY strong winds on the islands around Fraser over the weekend, that bit is fairly certain, beyond that is more doubtful, but I'll keep you posted. Glittababe - its likely to stay very wet and very windy into next week, at the very least.

http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=501688

Also watch the BOM site and listen to ABC -any updates from Emergency Services will be broadcast by them.
