Default So, what can you do yourself?

I understand in Australia that when you own a house, you cannot simply put in an extra socket or too, install your own power shower, phone extension etc.
What actually are you allowed to do? I presume you can decorate yourself? lay tiles? Floor and wall? Can you do basic plumbing like install a dishwasher and create connections if they were not there?
Is there a link to the rule book that assumes everyone is incompetent at DIY and what tasks we are not allowed to do?

Don't know many of the rules, but you can't do things like building extensions - the way you can in the uK - without going on courses and getting a licence! Depends on the value of the work you are planning I think.

You can decorate and you can tile floors and walls, though not in "wet areas" without a licence. You cannot do any of your own plumbing or electricity regardless of how competent you think you are.
It doesn't stop people from doing these jobs but it sure makes selling your property difficult. Everything has to be inspected when doing a renovation.
DIY here seems to be a term used for managing all the contractors you need to use for your particular renovation project.
