And about 70% of them are used as guard dogs in peoples 'backyards' and never see inside their owners houses. About 50% bark constantly; morning, noon and night. About 25% of them never get to do their business on their walks because they are being pulled along by their jogging owners. Where did I get the % figs from? They are extremely rough!
As for cats, you never see them on the Mornington Peninsula as the local council has a 24 hour curfew on cats to protect their precious wildlife.

Some interesting stats from Burkes Backyard:

http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/200...friendly_pages

4. Maremma Sheepdog
5. Rottweiler
6. Fox Terrier
7. Alaskan Malamute
8. English Setter

3. Hungarian Vizsla
4. Pug
5. Airedale Terrier
6. Welsh Corgis (both types)
7. Whippet

3. Fox Terrier
4. Alaskan Malamute
5. Rottweiler
6. Akita
7. Australian Silky Terrier
8. Old English Sheepdog
9. German Shepherd
10. Jack Russell Terrier

The previous poster (Neil S) was obviously a cat lover who doesn't believe they should follow the same rules as other responsible pet owners.

Nothing at all, but there's a real phobia against cats in Aus. They cause damage to wildlife yes, but not nearly as much as foxes, dingos and other wild dogs. There's no foxes or dingos on Tasmania, and the result is that many native mammals that are now rare or extinct on the mainland are still common there, with this reason being given as one of the main factors.

Looking through that list I was interested to see the Alaskan Malamute as a dumped dog. Some friends of ours who live closer to the highway have just had one of these adopt them. It turned up last bank holiday and just hung around until they went out to shoo it away, whereupon it rolled over and played dead . Needless to say as animal lovers they fed it and let it sleep on their old chair on the veranda. It's been with them for close to 2 weeks it's been trained to sit and stay etc. looks around 14 months old according to the vet they took it to for a microchip check. The pound doesn't want it and they've advertised in the local lost and found as well as placed adds on the notice board at the servo yet no one has claimed the poor thing. It hasn't barked yet and the kids have played with it constantly it appears used to small children. Our only conclusion as to the reason for it's appearance is that it must have been lost by a family travelling either up or down the Bruce interstate. The reason I keep referring to it as an "it" is because being realistic they realise it's such a well cared for pet it must be heartbreaking for someone to have lost it, they don't want to name it as that would imply a long term thing.

Wouldn't say I'm a 'cat lover' as such, I quite like them. My six year old son however loves animals and he wants a dog and a cat. However it doesn't seem fair to keep the cat cooped up the whole time, when you see them roaming around in every other country in the world.

Looks like there maybe a few less Pit Bulls

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117...2-1242,00.html

THE State Government is considering a ban on pit bull terrier breeding and ownership after a second attack in four days yesterday.

A 75-year-old man suffered bites to his arms and legs after he was mauled by two pit bulls on a Homebush footpath.

Yesterday, leading paediatrician Dr Andrew McDonald pleaded for pit bulls to be banned.

But council rangers warned a ban would be difficult to enforce.

Far, far too many - and the vast majority are fully unemployed and unemployable.
