Smoko in the arvo
Its all happening here this arvo!
The man comes to fit our carpet and goes ouside for a smoko, he comes dashing back in and asks if we know of anyone having a burn off over the road?
Feeling a tad suspicious as there is a total fire ban in our
neighbourhood right now we go out to sticky beak, we see a small amount of smoke across the road, hum and ho for a about 30 secs. Then suddenly we hear aload of crackles and bangs and think oooooh shit!!!
The local on-hand volunteer fire service were very quick to respond, it consisted of Hup and Badge. They sprinted across the road, across the neighbour's garden and across their back yard to their back fence. There was a pregnant pause while they gazed over the fence (well Badge peeked through a knot a lot lower down wishing he had his heels). We just caught Badge saying to HUP "did ya bring your uniform?".(HUP has registered with the local C.F.A country fire authority)
Suddenly there was action!
Badge (in true army style) leapt over the fence (the split second the neighbour stumbles from out of her house and says "don't worry about me fence") Hup is reeling out the hose and throws it to Badge who begins to water the shrubs and ground before HUP (again in true Army style) tells him to direct the water against the fence. Badge then turns and faces the fire (now only 10 feet away and out of hose range) and...
..the cavalry arrive, Badge watches through a haze of smoke trying to see what was actually burning, it consisted of trees and a large shed. Then the fire crews cracked on with the proper hoses and Badge was nearly drowned!!
Later on when statements were being taken (Leah and her friend overheard a group of teenage boys saying "we'll have to leave it till next week, and come back and do it then. The little cherubs won't be here then" and the girls remembered and gave a full description which matched a description given by someone else from the scene today!)and contact details exchanged, witnesses reported seeing a figure in shorts emerging through the smoke, only to turn and leap back over the fence.
Badge was last seen muttering about "his application to the CFA"
PS. Luckily no one was injured, but it was bloody scary and made us realise that fire should be taken very seriously indeed:lecture:

Bit of a scary episode then? I'm absolutely terrified of the possibility of fire - yet so many Aussies are really complacent about it. I made the Bloke get contents insurance, even though he keeps telling me we are quite safe here.
Hevs, glad to see you are picking up the lingo!! And as for Badger, don't I remember a previous post saying he wanted to be a volunteer firie?

Well done Badge and HUP. Are you in a Bush area?
Do I take it that the neighbour had a "she'll be alright" attitude to the fire?

No the neighbour had a small baby and hadn't noticed it. As it was over her back fence (About 15ft away from it I think she was a bit concerned.

She was feeding her at the time in the front of the house and didn't see the bellowing smoke. She yelled about not minding the fence cos Badge hesitated mid jump incase he damaged the fence
I don't think any of the ozzies have a casual attitude towards fire, especially not in bushy (STOP IT ) areas. Judging by today you just can't afford to be slack.
By the way Badge and HUP have had a cold one to get over their exploits!
