From what I've seen in the week I've been here, smoking is banned in restaurants but allowed in pubs.

Yes there are - very strict ones. It's absolute bliss for non-smokers.
NO SMOKING in restaurants, cafe's, bar lounges, hotels (rooms included), office buildings, shops, etc, etc - the list goes on and on. Fresh air prevails! As a non-smoker, you will be thrilled.
As for throwing cigarette butts out of car windows - a very common practice in the UK - it's an extremely serious offence. Many bush fires in Australia are started this way and everyone is very vigilant when it comes to such things.

It's good to have these smoke-free places - but I wish it extended to the streets too... We were outside the E Sheds in Fremantle this morning and there were several people wandering up and down (in the smoke free zone too) smoking. Our motel room bans smoking, but they provide ash trays so you can smoke on the balcony.

Contentious as it is, it would be far better if people were only allowed to smoke in their own homes.
