Small cars in Australia

Hi

Am researching car buying for when we arrive in Oz. My wife is short - 5ft 0 inches. In Europe she'd drive something like a Renault Clio, However, I've been told that European models of car are relatively expensive.

I've been looking on http://www.redbook.com.au/ for small cars but am confused. I do not know what the typical small car Japanese or Holden/Ford models are in Australia

Could someone tell me what the common small car models are out there (non European makes).

Thanks

Think Ford do the Fiesta over here, but its a different shape to the European model.

Daihatsu have a couple of smaller cars on the market here too I believe.

Unless you're planning on buying for you get here, probably best to have a wander around a couple of car yards when you arrive and see what your wife likes best :)

Ford Fiesta or Focus
Toyota Echo (Yaris in the UK) or Corrolla
Holden Barina (Corsa in the UK) new Astra looks nice ( I know looks can be deceptive  )
Mazda 2 and 3 (3's about Focus size)
Hyundai Getz (or excel or elantra)
Mitsubishi (Colt I think it is)

There's probably more....

I didn\'t realise the Toyota Corolla is considered a small care in OZ. I guess then you could also consider the Nissan Pulsar which seems the equivalent of the Almera.

The Toyota Echo seems a bit of an ugly car (if anyone doesn\'t mind me saying) and the Yaris is a far more attractive proposition.

The Echo and Yaris are identical in body shape. The quality of finish on the cars is different though - Yaris in the UK is made in France and had a nicer interior... The Echo just seemd a bit roughly finished... We have a Yaris here in the UK and hired an Echo in Australia this year....

The car classifications I have in the RACQ book are:
Light:
Toyota Echo
Hyundai Getz
Kia Rio

Small - Toyota Corolla
Medium - Toyota Camry
Large - Holden Commodore
Prestige - Honda Accord
Luxury - Merc C Class
and another 8 classes of people movers SUV, etc etc.

Thats the one!! I've just been out, done a 40km round trip & what would you know, normally hundreds of 'em but now not a single one. That would have bugged me all night!
