Sky+

Hi

Had a search and could not find the answer, is Foxtel the same as sky+ or just sky?

Thanks

Nic

I think foxtell IQ is similar -- watch when you like or something.

We had cable in the uk but I certainly wouldn't bother with foxtel here :)

Thanks Pheonix, yep, it seems to be the same.

My cousin has this in Oz. Their Foxtel box is identical to our Sky plus box. I did wonder if we could just take our sky plus box to hook up to Foxtel, but have been told they won't work.:( Don't know if this is true.

Foxtel IQ is identical to Sky+ - same box, same software. The only difference is that a UK box will NOT work in OZ and vice versa [different satellites etc]. Also in some places, Foxtel is delivered via cable rather than satellite but the box is the same.

There are fewer channels compared to Sky.

I personally wouldn't be without it - Oz terrestial Tv is pretty rubbish [apart from a gem now and then on ABC] so at least this way we can find something worth watching now and then - but it is expensive.

I agree Oz TV is really bad. In a conversation we had here at work yesterday every single program that people said they liked was either UK BBC, ITV or Chl4

From the little I've seen of it Oz terrestrial TV is pretty mind numbing, we've just signed a deal with Austar to get all channels free for a month but never really looked at Foxtel. Is there much difference? (I'd go with any provider that screens "Dexter" :D anyway)

I think Austar has more options regarding what packages to select than Foxtel. Austar don't offer a recorder box like Foxtel IQ which I think is bloody marvellous [there are better recorders but as an integrated package it's excellent].

I think the channel choice is the same though as Foxtel.

See my link above. Austar do offer the recorder box. Introduced it last month. :)

Thanks for that, I was amazed to see how many channels there are on offer from Austar.

We started watching Dexter and got a long way into the series before we left NZ, when I saw it was going to be screened here on Showtime I was well pleased! :D

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies

Do Austar and Foxtel supply all the states? When you say Foxtel IQ is expensive, how expensive?

Personally I love sky + because of the stop, rewind etc, so sad really, I know :o

Thanks for the correction, I had a feeling that was the case, but their website doesn't mention anywhere that I could find.

Re: Sky+

Prob with Aussie TV is not so much the quality of programmes, but the mind-numbing adverts and their frequency.

If you sit down to watch a film on a Sat night on one of the terrestrial channels at say 8.30pm, chances are the film will still be going way after midnight due to the amount of adverts they show, which also increase in frequency as the film progresses

Many a time I've either called it a day or fallen asleep before the film has finished.

Yea- they're not promoting it on the main page at the moment for some reason, but http://www.austar.com.au/mystar/ explains all. :)

Re: Sky+

I have been trying to find a price with these packages for the box. Austar I can only see instillation price, and cost per month, and the same with foxtel, although foxtel say they own the box. So when you cancel they get it back? Does anyone know what happens if it breaks while you have it?
Any opinions on which is best?
Thanks

Re: Sky+

We signed up with Foxtel yesterday. The 3 channels we have managed to tune on our television we can hardly watch. Foxtel are offering until Jan 31st:- Full package for 1 month free and free installation. Just before the month is up we can drop down to whatever package we want. We have taken out the equivalent of Sky + and if we drop to the lowest package it will cost $37.95 fort he package and $15 for the box per month. The full package including sport and movies is $109. The deal they are offering is for a 24 month contract. We can't get Austel here so went with this option.

I was always under the opinion SKY owned their box too.

If you cancel FOXTEL, whats the point in keeping the box?

If it breaks, your contractural monthly agreement means its always under warranty

Re: Sky+

Can i explain for you the diffence between Austar and Foxtel?
Foxtel is in control of the cities.
Austar is in control of the whole country outside the cities.
90% of the cities are cabled and run by Foxtel but some new areas were not
cabled yet so they have a Foxtel Dish.
Austar has no cable and are dish only.
Austar buys the channels from Foxtel so the content is the same but as Austar is country you may have a few local stations that are different but everything else is the same.
When you arrive go to Foxtel web site type in your postcode and they will tell you if you are covered by Foxtel or Austar.
All boxes are owned by the company and if they go wrong they replace them.
Hope this helps?

No, you own your own box with sky, which is why they weekly try to sell you insurance. If they break you have to buy another one. They normally give the boxes away for free when you join, but you have to pay for the sky+ boxes (unless you recomend a friend in which case you both get one for free).

Same box, same software, then it will work I would think, technically. May need some reconfiguring though.
Different satellites does not necessarily mean it won't work. I could pick-up different satellites on my Sky+ box if I wanted to if i move the dish around a bit.
The more likely problem is how many channels can be picked up on the satellite but are encrypted so unwatchable without a viewing card (from the likes of Foxtel etc) ie, chargeable.

Best to try reading a more suitable forum, you could start here:
