IT Skills Crisis?

IT Skills Crisis?
According to Australian IT News:
Apparently the people 'in the know' can't decide whether there is a shortage of skilled IT people in Australia or not, and therefore whether they should increase the numbers of visas available for migrants with these skills.
I'm curious to know the opinions anybody in the industry over there. Is you company short-staffed in that area? Have you had trouble finding IT work?
AS Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone considers whether to increase visas for skilled immigrants, the technology sector is deeply divided as to whether there is a shortage of IT workers.

There do certainly seem to be lots of jobs about for APs. We have recently shed 5 contractors - they've all walked in to another job straight away.

Re: IT Skills Crisis?
I'm working for a government dept here in Brisbane and have spoken to a few colleagues who are IT contractors. They are all saying that the IT market is very hot at the moment in Brisbane and the demand for IT skills is still very strong, especially in the public sector. Not sure what it's like in other states, but the Queensland government and the utility companies are spending loads on IT projects. May be they (government agencies and utility companies) should have a word with Minister Vanstone? Or, perhaps they have, hence the divided views?!

Re: IT Skills Crisis?
Wayne,
The market here in Melbourne seems good for specialist areas such as IT Security and networking. I'm not sure about sys admin etc. I had no trouble getting what was almost my 'dream job' (a pity, as I'd have liked a few more months slobbing about & sightseeing ).
The organization I work for recently shed some contract staff & they all seem to have other work lined up.
Cheers,
Anya.

Cheers guys. It sounds fairly promising then (from someone who hopes to in the market for a job in Brisbane some time soon ). I wouldn't really say I have specialist skills (I'm more a Jack of all trades TBH) but what you have said does back up my impression from the employment sites I've been keeping an eye on - that there is plenty of work out there.
Next question: Anybody know of a company that would like to sponsor my visa app?
