Default skilled independent visa/out of work info?

can someone tell me i am about to get my skills assesment done by tra and then apply under independent skilled visa i have been out of work from mid oct 2002 until 2nd april 2003 i have heard that you need to have been employed for the past 12 months out of 18 does this mean i need to have work the whole of the last 12 months of the past 18 or does this mean if i added up all the time i was unemployed during the last 18 months if more than 6 months this then means i cannot apply right now

do i need to have been working the whole of the last 12 months i also have been told 6 months of the last 12 months

where does this leave me?

do i need to work another 6 months and then think of applying i now have my skills forms here to fill up not sure what i need to do once my skills go through then i can then apply for that visa any help out there would be great
