SIR Visa Holders Already In Oz - What's It Like?
We're currently looking very carefully at the SIR visas and wonder if anyone who is already in Australia with one of these could pass on their experiences to date. How have the restrictions helped/hindered them? Would they do it again with this visa? Would they recommend this visa or not?
Also, does anyone knowif employers rate potention employees differently if they hold a SIR visa rather than PR?
cheers

Are you going to Adelaide on the SIR.
If you are have you looked at the AdleaideBrits website.

You will find plenty of peolpe with experiences of Adlaide and of the SIR.

Hi, we're off to Adelaide in march on STNI as that's only based on the pool mark rather than the 136 pass mark, we were on their skills wanted list and got state sponsorship no prob and then had a really fast application ,just over 3mths. It's a PR visa too rather than the SIR, so we get the perks of medicare etc too, don't know what the circs are for choosing SIR over STNI though, sorry!
The main thing with STNI is they like you to stay in SA for 2yrs, but actually don't seem to be able to chase you up too much, though apparently very naughty people could be deported if caught for flaunting their move to another state.

Hi,
We have been here for nearly a year now on SIR and everything is just great.
We managed to buy a house within 3 days of arrival and had settlement in 3 weeks. The FIRB was no problem it only took a week, the agent just wrote in the contract subject to FIRB approval, so dont be put off at looking at buying a house, if thats what you want to do. We have also purchased another house for investment but that one had to be new, as we already have a dwelling, again no probs with FIRB
The children go to a public school and we just pay the fee of $200 a year for stationary etc.
You get Reciprocal health cover, so you get a medicare card with that stamped on it, but it is exactly the same as if you were PR, you pay out first(if its not bulk billed) and then you get back a cheque for the bit the government pays. We have used the system and it works.
Taxation is the same as if you were PR
Get ambulance cover for $103 per year for the family(available at post office)
The ONLY thing you do not get is the Child Allowance. Apart from that everything is the same as PR, except having to wait the 2 years to apply.
No regrets what so ever.
We have a large 4 bedroom house, 2 cars and Nick has a good job and it is not the same as UK as he was in the RAF.
If you need any help just email or pm me and I will try and help
all the best
Liz
