Do you have to live and WORK in your designated area, or can it be else where within the regional postcode list?

Applicants for the SIR (Provisional) visa are required to sign an undertaking that they, and the members of their family unit, will not live, work, or study outside regional Australia or a low population metropolitan centre for the duration of their SIR (Provisional) visa.

SIR visa holders who do not comply with the conditions of their visa will not be in a position to apply for permanent residence at the expiry of their SIR (Provisional) visa and may risk having their visa cancelled.

the SIR scheme is similar to the existing STNI scheme bar obviously a few major differences e.g.

1. The visa is initially a provisional visa.
* * This means it is in effect a temporary residence visa (with no or limited access to e.g. social security)
2. The visa holder must reside in a designated area
3. Condition 8539 must be imposed on the visa. This condition requires you to live, work (and study if applicable) in a low population growth metropolitan or regional area of Australia.* link

And to add to this, you don't have to live in the same regional area that sponsored you (as far as DIMIA are concerned) - BUT if you don't, it may make it a lot harder to get PR at the end of the SIR visa period. So you have to be very careful.

If planning on going to Queensland, ask whether QLD is going to be prepared to sponsor SIR holders for STNI if they settle in regional Queensland - if the answer is no, then you are relying on employer sponsorship.

also:
SIR (Provisional) visa holders with school aged children attending public schools in regional Queensland will not have to pay international student fees. (Costs associated with school uniforms, textbooks and other school related costs will still be the responsibility of the SIR (Provisional) visa holder.)
