Cheeky mare. (I tried a while back, but the thread is closed.)
I think most of my info is OK, it's just that there's so much more there than when I left 3 years ago. Casino, theme park, new hotels, etc.

Re: Singapore to do list
I've been asked about KL. I've actually only stayed there once but I think I've commented on other people's threads about it so have a search and you should find something.
Alternatively ask in the Far East/Malaysia forum as there are people on there far more knowledgeable than I am.
I've stayed at the Westin, very nice, The Geek used to go a lot on business and rates the Traders.
I think of KL as Singapore's brash, and slightly naughty, sister. Much fun can be had there, not all of it legal. I liked it

Re: Singapore to do list
Definitely a Singapore Sling at Raffles
Eat chilli crab and drink Tiger beer
Have another cocktail at the top of the Marina Bay Sands, once you pay to get up there and buy the cocktail it will be the most expensive alcohol you have ever bought, but it is worth it, I think
Find an Indian tailor you like the look of, haggle VERY hard, and buy a made-to-measure silk (or whatever takes your fancy) suit

Re: Singapore to do list
Just got the latest Time Out newsletter in my inbox and thought it worth posting this here:
http://media.au.timeout.com/contentF...black-book.pdf
Have downloaded it myself, not read it yet, but TO is usually on the ball (and I might just know that one of the contributors used to live in Singapore )
(It's not me.)
edit: I've just realised how set-up that sounds. I promise you I had already started this post before I zoomed in and read the list of contributors.

Re: Singapore to do list
Been through Singapore a good few times now and here is what I think -
Raffles - Singapore Sling is very over rated as a drink and over priced. I know NOTHING about cocktails mind so I asked the expert on these matters - the wife what she thought and confirmed that is was rubbish. No doubt it is a spectacular place to stay a few nights, but as a non resident it isn't worth the journey I think.
I think about the best thing you can do in Singapore is go to the hawker centres / stalls when the sun goes down. These places come alive as all the Singaporeans knock off work and flood these places. All kinds of wonderful foods for no more than a few $. Some of the best food I have ever had have been in these places. You have got to try an authentic laksa from one of these places I love to just wander around the hawker centres and look at all the different cooking and people. Always head for the produce markets also even if I am not buying anything.
Little India is also worth a look for the shops and the food. Nice temples and culture around there.
Chinatown is worth a look, but I find it a little tacky and the restaurant food I have had here is not as good as the hawker centre food.
If you have kids a trip over to Sentosa is a must, great way to get there is via the cable car. Lots to keep the kids interested over there, fun parks, zoo, beaches and much more.
Take a bumboat river tour, did this on my first ever trip to Singapore and it is a good intro.
Or you could just find a nice place to sit with a few tiger beers

Re: Singapore to do list
Jon, if you'd read the link in my signature before you went you'd have known to ask for your Singapore Sling to be freshly made, not from those bottles of crap they keep under the counter for tourists
(It's still sugary rubbish IMHO, but a better class of sugary rubbish.)

Re: Singapore to do list
Hi
I've just had a week in Singapore and have been more times than I can remember now!
The zoo is definitely worth a visit and then you can stay to go to the night safari which is next door. We did the night safari again last year but we were a little disappointed as we felt there were less animals than the last time. The first time we went we were bowled over but last year the night was very hot and you had to keep moving to keep cool! That probably meant the animals were hot too and you couldn't really stop and linger to look.
Jurong Bird Park is fairly good although now we live in Oz many of the birds we saw the first time and were in awe of, we now see every day so it didn't quite have the impact this time!
Sentosa: haven't been there for ages and we were going to go but couldn't be bothered to get off our sunbeds this time! There are lots of new beach bars with outdoor lounge areas and sunbeds now which looked interesting but we had wall to wall sunshine on our week and decided to stay by our hotel pool!
Chinatown et al are definitely worth a wander around, Singapore is very safe and although you'll get a bit of hassle from the street vendors in Chinatown a firm no means they won't bother you much. If you wander around the back streets you can still see some old run down shop houses of old Singapore.
Food: must try hawker food! Lau Pa Sat in the city is one we normally go to, I've also heard Maxwell St food center is good and there is one on the East Coast Park which isn't too scary for first time hawkers. Don't go to Newton Circus even though it's had an overhall it's still not as good as the others! Try the Dim Sum at lunch time, Kaya toast if you like coconut for brekki is awesome.
Afternoon tea is also a must in Singapore! Raffles one isn't as good as it used to be, especially now they've moved it out of the Billard Room. We tried the Goodwood Park Hotel this year but although the food selection was good I felt a little let down by the surroundings as expecting a nice old colonial building the tea is served in a modern part over looking the pool. We also had afternoon tea in our hotel (Fullerton Bay) which was excellent and they said they would keep filling it up but we were too full on from the original selection!
Singapore Slings, is a mortgage job in Raffles but we went to Harry's Bar a couple of times at happy hour.
We didn't get over to Marina Bay Sands, we were going to but too hot to move from the pool! The only thing that put us off going was they said that they wouldn't allow any professional photographic equipment up there, so were weren't sure if that was big video cameras or would include our high-end SLRs.
There are lots of new cafes opened up in Singapore recently, tea lounges and coffee bars and Sunday brunch which has always been popular in the big hotels now seems to have spread to the local cafes as well. We went to Epicurious at Robertsons Quay on the river bank, very lazy brekkis and very much like doing brekki in Melbourne. Prive on Kepple Island is also a new in place for brunch and evenings, more expensive but nice outdoor lounge area in a nice marina setting, spied a few apartments I wouldn't mind living in!
Shopping: my favourite! If you are unsure about where to shop then head for the big department stores, Tangs, Robinsons and Isetan as they will carry a selection of brands and all have wonderful shoe departments. Shoes in Singapore, well it's just heaven for us budding Imeldas. I have always bought my shoes there as they are so much cheaper especially if there is a good sale on. I find shoes horrendously expensive in Oz so I always stock up, even the UK shoes are getting expensive (price of leather?). There is even a shoe shop in T3 of the airport airside so you can just slip another couple of pairs in on the way back
There is lots to do in Singapore but we've been so many times that now it's a place to enjoy instead of doing lots of sight seeing. As I said we had wonderful weather and a nice hotel pool so we didn't budge much as we did go for a rest ....and a bit of shopping.
The Time Out guide Seasider posted is really good and there are apps for the iphone you can download on guides.
Have fun, after 3 busy weeks in the UK plus 2 mega busy weeks since we've been back I could really do with reliving our week again!

Re: Singapore to do list
But did you get a dental check-up?
I buy shoes when I'm there; you can buy sandals in any colour imaginable and spend as little or as much as you like. I love Tangs designer section - although I'm in no way into designer clothes (or prices) I tend to buy good quality shoes and I'm still wearing a pair of gold sandals I bought there in 2005.
I think I've said this on that old thread but I never rated Raffles for Afternoon Tea. Did love the Goodwood but will take on board your recent experiences. Shangri-la was always good and, yes, the Fullerton. Do they still do the late night chocolate buffet? That was awesome, but don't have dinner first like we did!
