Just seen the flights are GBP399 return from the UK, which I thought was VERY good.

Virgin Atlantic are currently competing on the Oz routing and matching Singapore Airlines offer. They only fly to Sydney but connect to virgin blue flights Australia wide.

Some things more expensive here, others are cheaper.

COL is roughly similar - maybe slightly cheaper here.

Is this due to taxes or just a rip off?

I call BS on that one. 4 or 5 years ago yes certainly Australia was slightly cheaper. However, now I'm a firm beleiver that "COL" is lower in UK.

Of course it may just be that I spend a disproportionate amount of my disposable income on excatly those things that are WAAAY overpriced in Australia like:
  • travel,
  • groceries,
  • eating out
  • consumer electronics,
  • internet services,
  • banking,
  • clothing,
  • medical services
etc etc (I could go on)

and not so much on the things that are overpriced in uk like:
  • petrol
  • public transport

(cant think of anything else).

Totally agree. Speaking for Sydney anyway, it is horrendously expensive and our cost of living has effectively doubled while our salary has halved. No doubt about it. Just keep telling myself to enjoy the lifestyle benefits!!!!!
