Silly question - what is a Colourbond roof/house?
Strange question, I know but we have spread our searching to Tasmania although we do keep flitting back to our favourite SA. One thing we have noticed is that many houses are dsecribed as having a Colourbond roof, from piccies difficult to tell what this is, is it like corrugated metal - the sort that would be very noisy when it rains!
Hope someone can help with this, sorry it is a boring post, Saturday afternoon playing on the computer when I should be doing housework, pondering on the great questions in life, like what is colourbond?!

Hi Sammy
Great question which I just had to Google! It seems that it is a corrugated sheeting product made from steel. Or to be more precise, and I quote:
Roof sheeting manufactured from COLORBOND® steel is available in a range of attractive colours and shapes. It is durable and strong as well as being thermally efficient.
Don't stress about the housework this forum is much more fun! Cheers, T

They are the two main roofing materials in OZ. Both have strength/weakness.
Comes down to personal choice. In the cyclone areas most will be corrugated rather than tiles.
A corrugated roof without insulation under the roof will be noisy in rain (some people actually enjoy that sound!)

Re: Silly question - what is a Colourbond roof/house?
many aussies swear by colorbond, especially in regions of low humidty eg WA and SA.looking around our estate many houses with traditional tile roofs have cracked mortar joints caused by strong uv exposure and by contraction caused by cooler temperature's overnite. Here in WA there is a busy roof restoration company which sprays tile's back to there original color. This would never happen in the uk as the houses in question are only 20 years old.Color bond heats up far faster in the day time"when most people have aircon on" but cools far faster at nite ,thus not trapping heat in the roof space as most clay tiles do.The down side is you dont have to look outside to see if it is raining

Re: Silly question - what is a Colourbond roof/house?
We have a colourbond roof and it isn't noisy when it rains, no more than a tile roof. We have insulation up there which may of course be helping.
Colourbond supposedly lasts longer than a tile roof without the need for expensive maintenance, replacing tiles or taking them all off and reattaching (no idea on the technical term but I know my parents just had to do that) . Colourbond is also more secure in that it isn't possible for someone to easily break into the house through the roof by lifting tiles and creating a hole which I have had happen to some friends of mine!
I was deadset against colourbond when we were doing our selection for our house but to be honest, the modern colourbond roofs actually can look better than a tile roof!
On the negative side, I believe colourbond is more expensive so you will have to decide what is right for you

Colorbond is better at withstanding hail damage and/or possum invasion. Tiles crack in hail and rain floods in - seen it on a new house.
Our 350sq m Colorbond roof went on in one day.

Re: Silly question - what is a Colourbond roof/house?
We chose colorbond when we built our house in 1999 because it looked so much neater plus it is safer. We have strong winds here in WA and, as we were building on the coastal strip, we thought it would be advisable. So many of our neighbours homes have tile damage and leaks it's unreal. We were also told by a crime prevention officer that it is so much easier to break into a house with a tiled roof and much, much harder to do that with colorbond. We have roof insulation and don't have a problem with the rain noise, even in the winter when it buckets down. Along the coastal strip here in WA, colorbond is the most popular roofing material. It is slightly more expensive if you go for coloured steel, but we think it is well worth it.
Here's a couple of pic's of the house we built as we were establishing the garden.
