The boxes the professionals use are stronger than supermarket ones - double layer of cardboard I think. Excess Baggage Co still managed to reduce the bottom half of mine to pulp, so the stronger the box, the better.
If you do use supermarket ones, pick strong ones like wine-bottle boxes, do NOT use any that have held fruit/veg/flowers or anything like that - and check what the writing on the side says. If they have had stuff like that in there is a risk the box and its contents will be destroyed (under the quarantine/pest control rules).

The boxes cost me between £2-£4 each (though I think I got discount cos the company was shipping my gear out) - when I saw how strong they are compared to the normal boxes you see, I figured it was worth the cost. If you have some very light stuff its not so bad, but certainly for things that are heavier, its worth paying.

Polly is right, the proper shipping boxes are double walled, and have a far higher burst point than standard boxes....

Small price to pay when you consider how much your posessions are worth.

On one of those 'brits move to oz' programmes (cant remember the name of the prog!!) there was a couple who were living in a modified hut whilst they built their own house. when the container arrived and they opened it everything appeared to have just been chucked in willy nilly - had they been searched by customs or was this container-being-delivered just for effect? i remember their belongings were mouldy as the container had leaked.
what was going on? anyone know?
