Shredding Personal Paperwork

I've just begun the task of culling mountains of household bills, statements and so on.. I wonder if anyone knows whether there is a legal obligation to keep this stuff please? I know I have to for my business, but I've no idea about personal stuff. If I do need to keep stuff, how far back does it need to go please? Answers on a postcard please... :)

No legal obligation, but I kept the last one of everything so I had reference numbers etc if needed! Spent a week shredding before we left!

I scanned all of our paperwork prior to (shredding it, and) leaving.
might never need it, but for 8 hours work, i can sleep better at night knowing ive got it all stashed on a couple of CDs.

I always shred documents, esp if they are a few months old and I know payments have gone through etc.

Made it kinda hard when I needed documentation for a spouse visa but I think I have enough to hand.

I plan on keeping the last one of everything before we move....but asides from that I shred, shred, shred!

:D
