We plan to be out early 2008 after husband finishes army career, I am in work in Germany and have guaranteed contract until late 2009 but we/ or he will go over early 2008 with kids as Kate will start 2nd school Feb and as she has had 7 schools so far due to hubby's job and moving around we would like to settle her for secondary education. We will move to Melbourne as have family there (also have family in Brisbane and Hervey Bay).

I was going to say one additional concern on bringing a dog over is that if you are looking for rental initially, you'll get fewer choices as most rentals don't allow pets. And those that takes pets don't allow dogs indoor. But you have family so may be it won't be a problem.

The practical me would normally say get the pup once you're in Oz, you mad woman. However if it was my own daughter I think I would probably give in and get the pupp now.

I can't help thinking about a dogs point of view, and the stress some dogs go under in the relocation. Is is fair to put a dog through that if you have a clear choice not to, even if it makes your family feel better?

Jenny,

I agree and this is formost in my mind why put an animal through the stress if we can wait (as you can imagine after buddy died of heart problem we never want to go through that agian and are concerned). My hubby is away and we atlk about it every day over the phone, I guess there will need to be more talking!

Shame your not in the UK, we have 2 great dogs we're reluctantly going to have to rehome because of my sons Eczema.

Good luck in whatever you decide but don't forget it'll be you looking after the dog in 4 years or so when your daughter grows up as long as your happy to do that then go for it, lifes too short to put everything off. (I for one am getting sick of this being in 'limbo' feeling!)

many people asked us why on earth we were spending 'all that money on the dog', but she is part of our family, and i couldn't bear to leave her at home.
We have been asked the same question by people too.Our dog will be coming over with us even though its costing more than our flights combined.
The cost isnt an issue and he's a lot more loveable than some people i know.Lol.

we rescued a puppy rottweiler who was going to be put to sleep that very day if no-one took him, we named him dillan and fell head over heels with him, he's coming with us when we make the move in january. the thought did cross our minds about emigrating, but now he's here we know we made the right decision to keep him- don't really care about the cost and as for the rentals- i'd stay anywhere if it meant the dog could come
