Default Should we emigrate to Oz from UK?

Hi!
My partner (Nurse Ratched) and I are looking to emigrate to Oz in about August / September this year. We were both really looking forward to it until I saw all about this horrible legislation that's just been brought in that takes away most of the average worker's employment rights. As I have a permanent (non-communicable) illness that sometimes means that I have to take days off or even be hospitalised on occasion, I am particularly worried that any employer in Oz now wouldn't think twice about sacking me if I ever became ill. Obviously, in the UK with all the Disability Discrimination laws, I'm ok. Does this mean that I should not move to Oz? Also, is medicare really expensive for people with pre-existing conditions? How can I find out before I go?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve i am a hr manager in the uk and I have just started researching oz Law, and whilst I am in the early days for this I would not worry about the changes in the law from what I can make out they are standardising it across the country as a whole instead of each state having there own variations and unique T&C’s. it’s called work choice

In relation to your condition have not looked into in great depth but I am sure there in protection for disabled people out there similarly to the uk will let you know more when I find it.

You also have the right to take claims for unfair dismissal as in the uk via the Office of the Employment Advocate

Here are a few web sites I have found which may or may not help if you do find anything on disability discrimination please pm it to me as I would be very interested

Hi Steve

You've got some very valid points and will probably bring up lots of debate. Work reforms not good for employees but good for employers.
Hope this thread doesn't go the way of many others where someone brings up their opinion and gets shot down by others even though they have some very good points and possible experience of being in certain situation.

We are glad that we have lots of family out in Aus so if times get hard we have some external support close at hand and not 1000's of miles away.

One thing that you may need to bear in mind before you gbet to the workplace laws, is that all migrants need to have a medical before their visa is granted. Not knowing what your condition is of course, but it might be worth contacting an agent to assess your chances with the medical.

Exactly what I was about to say!

If you have an existing medical condition that requires extensive care (sounds to me as though you do), the chances of obtaining yor visa are somewhat reduced!
Not knowing the exact details of your condition I cannot be specific but I think you should really obtain some advice from a professional in the first instance.

I'm still waiting to see how bad/good these new regulations will actually be.

We've all heard the Union and Opposition view, which may be a little biased But in all honesty, I cannot imagne that a Political party would bring in something, that would sign their Parties death warrant at the next election.

I was here during the orginal GST proposal, and saw the propoganda to that, and how it would ruin the country etc etc., but that never happened in the way the opposition forcefully said, so maybe it may just be the same again.

It may not be as bad as the political doomsayers say. Until the final actual details are fully out, we will not know.

Hi
Medical condition is not something that requires care, unless something goes wrong that is (nothing's happened really since 1996). Went along to the Australia Emigration Expo in London a while back, spoke with the team from the Government of South Australia and was told I should have no problems with visa. Probably should have put that in original message above.
Appreciate all your advice though!

At the end of the day you will never know if you can get in unless you try. we may all fail for one reason or another but in my case at least i will have tried. if i chose not to go then that is my choice.

I feel that the cost vastly out weighs not knowing and for a couple of grand I am willing to take the chance to have the option of a better life for me and the kids.

Agents may well be able to help you out and George Lombard gets good reviews and helps a lot of people on this site.

go for it is only money and you can’t spend it when you are gone.
