You've probably gathered by now that I don't watch much TV, and the radio stations up here are 'local', as is the newspaper...!!! Ha-ha!!!

This is disastous for Australia. A British mate of mine who now lives in Sydney too was saying a couple of months ago how the UK was heading for race riots. This has has lifted the illusion that Australia is this highly integrated place where immigration has worked perfectly and everyone gets on just swell. Today an Australian friend was telling me how through secondary school he and his mates regularly had abuse from gangs of Lebanese/Samoans/Fijians/Vietnamese kids in school. It is an undercurrent that has headed this way for years.

Let's get one thing straight: the current problems relate specifically to the Lebanese community and its history of gang culture, abuse of women, criminal behaviour, etc.

This is no reflection on the average Australian, or on Australia's ability to produce a harmonious multicultural society from an extraordinarily diverse population.

It is, however, a reflection of the many problems within and caused by, the Lebanese community.

Pretty much like the Aboriginal communities here and the problems which arise from that...Australia isn't all that harmonious, it's just that a lot of it is swept under the carpet and forgotten about until such a time when it comes to a head and the 'minorities' start to 'fight back'.

A job as John Howard's speech writer beckons Vash! We have no problem, we have no problem, repeat after me, we have no problem and if there is a problem it is not down to the average Aussie, it's someone else's problem.

If you feel happier in your mind that this is just an 'imported problem' and everything is apples then fine. Remember though that it is happening in Sydney, not Beirut and it could easily spread to other cities and other ethnic groups.

....and being "extraordinarily diverse" who knows where this may all end...if every 'ethnic' minority (and thats not withstanding the 'original' Australians) decided to 'have a go', Australia could be in for some troubled times ahead, particulalrly if the general population stick their head in the hot sand....
