Short trip to Sydney to see Franz Ferdinand......

Going to Sydney for a few days in a couple of weeks time, going to see Franz Ferdinand is the excuse, any other reccomended places, sights, things to do on the days/nights we are there.

We will be staying at Darling Harbour and had a thought to go to the Blue Mountains but thats about it.

Any ideas appreciated.

Blue Mountains is about a two hour train journey away, so I guess it depends how much of your day you want to give up travelling. That said, it's an interesting journey. In Sydney, we enjoyed the Sky Tower with its observation platform, hopping on and off ferries to the various areas of the harbour, the Opera House, the bridge museum (not the climb - big rip-off), the food court in David Jones, the Rocks and sipping an iced coffee in Hyde Park. :)

Take a lovely walk from the Opera House through the Botanic Gardens and have lunch at the cafe in there. Lovely place to sit and watch all the flying foxes (huge bats) swooping above your head. All completely free of charge (except your lunch of course) :)

If you want to see some of the harbour on your own (skippered) yacht for an afternoon try www.sydneyprivatesailing.com.au

If there's a few of you the cost is not too bad (about £280 for half day between you). We had a fantastic afternoon not so long back. The woman who runs it (and skippers it) is really lovely (Annie) - sip cold wine, listen to music, go superstar house spotting, try sailing it yourself (under the watchful eye of Annie of course!).

A really great way to see Sydney!

Yep, the yacht is fantastic. It's just such a nice relaxing way to see the harbour. You start out from Clontarf Marina which is a beautiful little bay just round from Manly so you get to see lots of the harbour. An afternoon is just about enough time to take a leasurely sail to the harbour bridge/opera house and back. When we're in Oz it will be the first thing we book when people come to visit.

And the nice thing is that it's not a big company or anything (you can probably tell that from the website!), just a woman (an expat of many years actually) who loves sailing and has got her own yacht. She does lessons and all sorts as well.

Glad it has given you ideas...

Graham
