Short term Rental in Melbourne(when you first land)
Hi everyone,
We are finally due to fly out for good in early March and are headed for Melbourne.
Can anyone recommend a place to rent initally for the first couple of weeks when we land?
We have looked at a few options but seem to be coming across more geared up to the long term rental market (which will be great further down the line) than aimed at people who have just got off the plane.
There are only 2 of us, no kids, no pets and no furniture!
We just want somewhere pretty inexpensive (or as cheap as we can get away with) that's either in or not too far out of town.
If anyone knows of anywhere or has any ideas (good or bad) then all suggestions will be gratefully received.

Hope the map also helps give you an indication of areas. Where do you intend to work/live in the longer term?
Note some places now offer free pickup from airport and even free car rental which really saves $$$.

Longer term we will probably both be working fairly centrally, he is a recruitment consultant, I'm a financial controller so I may be more industrial area kind of based.
We are happy to let the jobs dictate the longer term rental location so we don't have the commutes we do at the moment (I take 90 mins to do 30 miles, his is 75 mins for a similar distance in the opposite direction).

Hi Charlene
You could maybe stay in the caravan parks, there is a Big 4 close to Melbourne. http://melbourne-holiday-park.vic.big4.com.au/
For 4 weeks in March you would be looking at:
$2220 for a standard cabin (it is not en suite and you use the toilet/shower blocks)
or for a better quality cabin you would be looking at $4330.
You would still have the expense of getting a taxi to the accommodation and hiring a car so it probably would work out a lot more expensive.
Your other alternative is to stay in a back packers hostel, there are quite a few around the city, not a great place for a long stay but if it is for a couple of days it may be another option.

Forgot to say you also have the Quest Apartment Chain, however, when I priced up for a client recently the cheapest one was $155 per night ($1085) and went up to $320 per night ($2240 per week)

In the end you will need to weigh up location versus cost (and it will be material). Also be wary of really really cheap accomodation in the city - there is usually a good reason ie fleas, noise, space, the additional costs ie having too eat out all the time due to lack of kitchen/food storage.
As you are travelling out of rush hour expect to be travelling Frankston/Mornington to CBD inside 40 mins by car just over an hour using public transport. You may find this site useful for gauging travel time:

We used these http://www.accommodate-oz.com.au/ Very good - you can be picked up at the airport and taken to the house and they will even arrange for groceries of your choice to be at the house waiting. It's a husband and wife team who have been through the same experience and so are a wealth of knowledge too. Good luck!
