Fly direct to Airlie BEach for the Whitsundays. Lovely up there. Nearer to Brissy is Noosa and it's very nice there and closest nice place is Mooloolaba. Caloundra is the closest but not the nicest IMO. Don't bother with Brissy itself or the Gold Coast above Burleigh. Personally any of these are a waste of time and too commercialised.

Would love to do that! Thanks Alfresco! Am still trying to sort out the itinerary. I am trying to fit everything around my son. He's not sure on his dates for being with us. He's FIFO up in Darwin but is hoping to be back on the GC during our stay. So will let you know much nearer the time if that's ok with you?
And BC, Denzil and Grayling, thank you for the tips. Am googling everything as we speak!

You can always rent a 4x4 for Fraser but it's advisable to jetwash the underside once back on the mainland before returning the vehicle as the rental companies like to retain the large deposit for any trace of salt water on the vehicle.
