Shoestring budget
 

Is there anyone out there that have done the big adventure on a shoestring budget, succesfully. and was able to get on the property ladder out in Perth.

what do you call a shoestring budget?

Dont quit your job, take a month off for holiday. Get a flight and have enough money to pay your first months rent and bond. Have a return flight for a months time.. and if you dont get a job in that time, you go back to work in the uk with everything still intact!

Get a job and you are sorted. Its the same as uk really if you think about it. If you had no money here what would you do.
We are going out there BELIEVING that we have no money and will apply this principal, and work in the city for a year to earn top dollar and weigh up where we want to live for in a years time, rather than getting the big house and boat and and and ....... like the rosetinted specs brigade do, and put job hunting to the back of thier minds(ala a new life down under programs, not everyone i must stipulate b4 i get pummled) and live the life of riley til its time to find work as they are skint. We are off to oz with a five year plan as for when we reACH THERE AND WHAT WE WANT O BUILD UP TO, JUST THE SAME AS WE ARE DOING IN THE UK.
Then we can bank our money from house sale and live mainly off the interest, as its higher in o, until the time is right to buy a nice 1/2 bed flat house, no pool etc, and then maybe another and rent that one out. We thought it would be more benificial to buy 3 or 4 littler houses or flats and rent them out than buy 1 big house and have to spend all week cleaning it as we havcent go kids yet.

Jus our thoughts, and we dont imply our theory applies to anyone but us, but if it helps then great.

Yeah you are right not really enough info there, I am a 24 year old electrician, taking over £10, it is myself, My Girlfriend and a little one that is due very very soon.

And I was panicking about there not being enough equity from our house to get by. Well the very best of luck to you. Must say I love your attitude - go for it. As my sis in WA says "so what if you're poor when the sun is shining."

There have been threads about how people have got on with little or no equity. Can't remember names at the moment. If you have the right mind set anything can be done. Good luck.

We landed with hardley anything but the skids on our bums and we did fine. we returned to the uk but not because of money. if we had stayed we would have probably been on our way to getting a mortgage now.

If you really want something you can get it, it just means making a little sacrifice along the way, maybe not renting as nice a house as you would like give you a little extra saving each month.

we are going out end of sept ( all being well with meds) and hope to take £10k if we can save that much! we have 3 kids. difference is, i have a job to go to, so potentially can start living off aus money straight away rather than keep dipping into what little savings we have.
I think attitude has alot to do with it :)

Yes.

We haven't came out here with sack fulls of money and we're doing ok.

We had $10K when we stopped travelling. This was enough to get a rental property, get some furnishing and start from scratch. We got a lot of things second-hand or at auctions. We had bought a car earlier, though.

Getting work has been relatively straight forward. The Aussies really want you to have worked in Australia before they are willing to give you a go. So just take what comes along, it seems to be easier to change once you have an Australian company on your CV, to get the next job.

As for buying, at present it's around 50% cheaper to rent here. The housing market has peaked, and we are not in too much of a rush to get a mortgage just yet...the house prices look like staying stagnant for the best part of the next 18 months. That should give you enough time to get a deposit together if you really want to get on the housing ladder.

megs just tries to wind other people up and doesnt seem to like it back.

Megs gives lots of good info, its just a shame that they are marred by pom bashing as it could offend some new comers and maybe put them off posting.

That all. I dont have a prob with megs. I love a good retort, and megs never fails.
