Question Shipping UK PS3 to Perth and taking games on plane in CD wallet

Hi guys

Well im hopefully going to be flying to Perth to live, by the end of this year with my family. I have a few questions though.

I'm a complete gaming freak and I'm thinking of posting my UK PS3 to Perth and taking all my games out of the cases and putting them in carry case that hold like 100 discs.

1) Does anyone know how much it will cost to post the PS3 and will there be any custom charges?

2) Will Customs want any kind of cash for bringing the games into the
country via my flight? (Taxes?)

3) Im taking all my HDD's out of my pc which contain Backups and ISO's of all
My pc games etc, will customs allow me to bring them in containing the
Backup's?

I will be shipping my PS3 cases over with the container, but im not sure if i should bother with the PC games as they are all backed up on my HDD.

Any advice or comments would be very appreciated

what do the customs check what you have on your HDD?

I have had my friend travelling with their laptops and also hard drives with all sort of stuff on that I have never heard anyone asking them what's on their drives :/

Why are you mailing the PS3? Can't you just take it along with you?

If you are going on a permanent visa, and if this is your first trip then there's some extra baggage allowance too.

Well I didn't know if customs have restrictions for HDDs. I know that they ask you if your mobile contains any porn, as certain porn material is illegal in Oz. Seeing as my HDD only contains my game backups and the usual PC crap inclu music, movies etc. I don't think I will have a problem.

I will be on a perspective marriage visa, as my fiancee has residency already but she is currently living with me in the UK.

The PS3 weighs around 6KG and that's alot if I'm planing to take clothes etc. I did get a quote of £117 for posting it so I don't know what would be the best option. Depends if I have to pay any duty for it?

117 sterlings for posting. May as well just put a bit more money in it and buy a new one when you are in Australia.

or you could just take it along and pay extra baggage charges? Will save a few pounds.

And im sure there will be some work around for the customs if u do end up posting it.

If u have to pay duties for getting it in australia then probably u cud buy a new one in the amount equalling to postage + duty.

Well i did think about paying any surcharges on the excess baggage but i don't want to be carrying more than i have to as i will have our little girl to think of

I don't want to consider buying another PS3, as all my account details and trophy's are linked to this system and I don't want to re do all my games for the trophy's etc. lol

I have spoken to the missus and shes happy for me to spend that amount on postage so i think i will post it, but how do i avoid paying duty on something i already own that's being relocated?

Thanks gr8leo87 for your feedback btw

If it was me, I wouldn't risk loss or damage by mailing it, or even using a courier service. It might well get opened by customs for checking, anyway. Why not just put it in your hand luggage or pack it with your clothes?

Really? Really?

I've travelled in and out many times, with laptops, external HDD's (including xbox 360 HDD), usb memory sticks and phones and never once been asked what's on them. I'm sure you (and your porn ) will be fine.

@Curly Well the PS3 weighs 5KG so would i be better taking it in the suitcase or on the plane with me? I can buy a carry case for it, bare in mind its the very 1st model that came out (60GB) Sorry for the questions but i have only flown once :S I won't be taking many clothes, just personal stuff that i don't want to wait 3 months for lol

As for the porn.....LOL it was a couple i spoke to who went to Perth, so maybe they were unlucky or something. I could get porn of the net anyway, god knows why i would want it on my phone.

You can migrate to a new machine.

There is a function in the PS3 o/s to migrate your stuff to a memory stick for just this purpose

Sell the old one on ebay, buy a new one here. Check JBHIFI.com.au for rough pricing.

Posting is nuts - highly likely to get 'hurt' in the process, plus you get a new one with new warranty
