Default shipping household and car in same container etc

Is it worth taking a car to australia or really if its a high value car or vintage, reason i ask just thinking there maybe i can take mine, but to be honest its a 2006 now is it really worth it.
I was planning on just shipping my household stuff and get a 20ft container but was thinking maybe i could get a 40ft one and ship car as well,do the shipper ship cars and your household stuff in same container?whats the changes of car getting damaged while household stuff is in there.
I wonder price of 40ft vs a 20ft is it worth it with adding a car, what costs are involved when taking a car do you pay fees or other stuff when taking a car,i only have got a astra and i go it from almost new but i thought probably best sell it and with that money get something over there is this a better option, just someone said to me take car im just not sure now, cost of bigger container and maybe other costs vs buying another car over there is it worth it and are parts available over there for astra,i see there are cars like it but they seem to be called holden and not vauxhall are they the same company

Hi Brian,

Yes you can put your car in the same container as the household goods no problem. This will usually be protected with a bulkhead (A piece of wood that is fixed to the container infront of the car to stop any boxes or furniture falling onto the car if there is movement) and fixed down using blocks and straps to make sure that it doesn't move during transit.

Price wise I would suggest asking your moving company for a quote for both options - with our without the car, and then comparing the difference with the cost of getting a similar replacement (or satisfactory replacement to you) when you get there.

Here is some further info on importing a car:

All vehicles being imported to Australia are subject to duty and tax as follows:-
• Duty - 5% based on the purchase price on the vehicle or current market value
• Tax -10% based on total of cost price of the vehicle, ocean freight, Insurance
and duty
• Luxury tax 25% if the value of the vehicle exceeds Aud$58,000.00

All vehicles coming to Australia are also subject to Import Permit obtained prior to shipping cars from Federal Office Of Road Safety, Canberra. This application must be applied for and submitted direct by the client & the form can be obtained from the below website.http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...plication.aspx

To qualify for the Personal Import Scheme you have to have owned and used your vehicle overseas for 12 continuous months and have an Australian Permanent resident Visa, applying for permanent residency, on a Sub Class 457 Visa, a Sub Class 410 Visa or travel on a New Zealand Passport.

Hope that helps?

Is that new, or only with certain shipping companies?

When we left the USA I was informed that if we broght a motor vehicle back, (The plan was to bring back a car and my sons moped) it had to go in a container of it's own with nothing else.

They got sold.

Certainly plenty of people have reported on here bringing their cars/bikes UK to Aus in the same container as their household goods.

good question, and yours wont be the only case where companies have said they can't share a container with HHG... basically, yes, it comes down to individual shipping companies, transport between collection and port (and individual shipping lines) and has to do with the classification of vehicles as hazardous goods because of the fuel for example. This means certain paperwork has to be submitted and certain licenses have to be held.

The USA particularly run into problems with this because of the huge inland distances often required to transport (sometimes by rail for example) and the need to find transporters with the appropriate licenses so often a company will simply say no (as the fines are significant if they get it wrong and dont drain all the fuel for example) whilst another may be able to do so.

Hope that makes sense!
